When one of the world’s most expensive, coveted luxury watchmakers collaborates with a value-driven brand like Swatch, rumors swirl. For the last few weeks, horology nuts have been tripping over themselves trying to figure out what Audemars Piguet and Swatch were up to. Most figured it would be an attainable tribute to the AP Royal Oak, which would have followed a previously trodden path.

But whoa, did we get it wrong.

The watch world ignited yesterday as Swatch and Audemars Piguet (AP) officially unveiled a historic collaboration: the Royal Pop. Breaking from the traditional wristwatch format, the collection reimagines the beloved Royal Oak as a series of vibrant, mechanical pocket watches.

Which begs some questions. Who is the target demographic? And have they ever owned a pocket watch?

A ‘Royal’ Departure From the Wrist

For weeks, enthusiasts speculated that Swatch would repeat its “MoonSwatch” formula by releasing an attainable version of the Royal Oak. Instead, the brands leaned into the heritage of the 1986 “Pop Swatch,” creating a “new way to wear time.”

And by that, the brands mean timepieces designed to be “popped” out of cases and into various accessories, including calfskin lanyards, bag clips, or dedicated stands that transform the watches into desk clocks.

The collection has eight distinct models housed in 40mm Bioceramic cases that mirror the octagonal silhouette of the Royal Oak, down to the signature hexagonal screws and “Petite Tapisserie” patterned dials.

Mechanical Heart: Hand-Wound Sistem51

When it comes to timekeeping, the Royal Pop brings firepower that goes beyond many of the best field watches. Swatch’s manually wound Sistem51 mechanical movement powers the system.

It has a whopping 90-hour power reserve — days beyond most automatic wristwatches, though it does require winding. It also has an anti-magnetic Nivachron hairspring, a nice, albeit seemingly pointless, technology in this type of wristwatch.

Finally, the pop-art decorated finish is visible through the sapphire caseback.

The Collection: Lépine vs. Savonnette

The lineup is split into two classic horological styles across eight colorways:

  • Lépine Style ($400): Has the crown at 12 o’clock. Notable versions include the Huit Blanc (all-white with rainbow indices) and Otto Rosso (pink and red).
  • Savonnette Style ($420): Has a crown at 3 o’clock and a subsidiary small-seconds dial. Highlights include the Lan Ba in navy and light blue.

So, Will Gen Z Embrace the Pocket Watch?

According to a few questionably scientific polls, many younger people struggle to quickly read analog clocks. Not by their own fault, as most people today rely on phones, smartwatches, or other digital displays to measure time. So a jump not to the classic wristwatch, but to the pocket watch, is a fascinating move.

Ilaria Resta, AP’s CEO, noted that the collaboration aims to bring future generations to the world of mechanical watches. And looking at the designs, the brands are clearly targeting young consumers with fun, casual watches that seem like they’d make a heck of a statement piece at a nightclub or classroom.

“Why this collaboration?” asked Ilaria Resta, AP’s Chief Executive Officer. “For the joy and boldness it represents. Because audacity is often the starting point of innovation and new ideas. And because it invites a broader audience, including the younger generations, to experience mechanical watchmaking differently.”

At around $400, the watches are by no means cheap. For a young consumer, that’s the price of a smartwatch that serves as an alarm, tells time, tracks fitness, and so much more.

For now, it’s certain that the collaboration has put a giant exclamation point behind the AP and Swatch names. Not only is this partnership the first time Swatch has collaborated with a brand outside the Swatch Group, as Audemars Piguet remains fiercely independent, but the brands have also made a bold statement together: The pocket watch is back, and it’s brighter than ever.

The Royal Pop launches this Saturday, May 16, 2026, exclusively at selected Swatch boutiques worldwide. With lines expected globally, the release is strictly limited to one watch per person, per day.
