With my thumb on the throttle, my e-cruiser — the Tenways Wayfarer — and I sped down the double-wide dirt road. I was mesmerized by the reflection of Mt. Crested Butte’s towering pyramid-shaped rock face on the surface of Peanut Lake. Suddenly, I realized how smooth the ride was despite the sea of potholes. It nearly felt like I was cruising across pavement.

Such a cushiony, floaty ride is thanks to the extra-wide saddle, suspension seat post, high-volume tires, 27.5-inch wheels, and upright geometry of the Wayfarer. The front fork with adjustable air suspension and the motor’s ultra-smooth acceleration are also unique, especially for e-bikes in this price tier.

Billed as an all-terrain city e-bike, the Wayfarer bridges the gap between the concrete commute and off-pavement tangents. It’s also the official 2026 debut for Tenways in the U.S. market. The Netherlands-based brand has been steadily carving out a reputation in Europe for quiet, low-maintenance urban e-bikes since its crowdfunding campaign in 2021.

In short: Built with progressive tech, the Tenways Wayfarer ($2,199) is a plush, robust Class 2 step-through e-bike that excels in comfort, smooth power transition, and commuter utility. While its heavier footprint and lower payload capacity limit its heavy-cargo utility, its smart auto-switching sensor technology delivers extremely smooth, lag-free acceleration. Plush Ergonomics & Comfort-Focused Geometry

Tenways calls this machine “The Comfort Cruiser,” and the brand’s not wrong. The geometry and plush contact points back up that claim, which I discovered through a month of testing. On a mix of paved and dirt roads, my partner and I spent the better part of our short spring season testing the Wayfarer around Crested Butte, Colo.

To isolate you from rough roads and potholed pavement, Tenways uses a dual-damping setup: a FIX-15 front suspension fork and a suspension seatpost beneath the saddle. (Yes, it actually works.)

A wide, cushioned Aifeite premium saddle measures a generous 265×225 mm to deliver exceptional long-ride support for the sit bones. It also has an adjustable stem that lets you easily tweak your handlebar height, which we did.

Finally, the bike features a low, ultra-accessible 6061 aerospace-grade aluminum step-through frame that eliminates the awkward leg swing.

Dual-Sensor Innovation Meets Relentless Power

At the heart of the Wayfarer’s impressively smooth ride quality is its powertrain management. The bike pairs a dependable 500W Bafang rear hub motor — peaking at 750W and 65 Nm of torque — with an automatic sensor switch. While other e-bikes can experience sudden surges or initial delays, this one offers gradual, smooth acceleration.

That’s due to a well-built system that automatically switches modes. When you start from a dead stop or climb a steep hill, the torque sensor mirrors your power input. Once you’re up to speed on flat pavement, it efficiently glides with a cadence-matching assist.

Wayfarer vs. Aventon Aventure

As an urban cruiser, the Wayfarer positions itself against established rides like the Aventon Aventure 3 ($1,999), another popular all-terrain, fat-tire bike. Glassing the specs, the comparison highlights two distinct design philosophies:

• Weight: At a net weight of 57.5 pounds (scaling up to 66 pounds with its premium mudguards, kickstand, and rear carrier installed), the Wayfarer is noticeably nimbler than the 76-pound Aventon.
• Tires: Aventon opts for ultra-wide 26″ x 4.0″ fat tires meant for loose sand and deep mud. The Wayfarer strikes a faster-rolling compromise with puncture-resistant Kenda EPS 27.5″ x 2.6″ tires, which track well on pavement and gravel without the sluggish steering penalty of a true fat tire.
• Range: Powered by a 48V 15Ah/720Wh removable battery built with premium imported 21700 cells, the Wayfarer boasts a massive maximum range of up to 80 miles on pedal assist. The Aventure taps out at a claimed 65 miles, making the Tenways bike the choice for battery endurance.

Password Protection, Bike Tracking

The tech layout on the Wayfarer is clean and functional. Atop the handlebars is a minimalist 4.3-inch Bafang TFT LCD display that’s crisp and readable, even in sunlight.

It features a password-protected lock for an added layer of digital security: the motor won’t start without entering the four-digit code. It takes a bit of time to get used to entering at the start of each ride. But it was reliable, and I appreciated the theft deterrent. The display includes a handy Type-C charging port to keep your phone or GPS topped off.

To log the day’s beta, the bike pairs with the Tenways App to record mileage, performance metrics, and routes. It also features Apple Find My integration, allowing iOS users to track their bike’s location from their phone — a peace-of-mind bonus.

Highly Visible & Ready for Wet Weather

Commuting requires all-weather confidence, and the Wayfarer is built to withstand turbulent conditions.

First, visibility is a strong suit. Beyond the highly reflective sidewall strips on the Kenda tires, the bike comes equipped with a 55 Lux LED headlight. It also has fully integrated rear turn signals mounted directly to the MIK-compatible rear cargo carrier. I really appreciated this element. Even in a small town, it’s key to remain visible to drivers.

Stopping power is handled by smooth hydraulic disc brakes that are reliable, even in rainy or snowy conditions. We rode in both this spring. The electrical components — including the sleek down-tube battery — have a robust IPX6 waterproof rating. That ensures rain, puddles, and heavy splashes won’t cause issues.

I really like that the battery sits behind a protective, matching frame plate. Other e-bikes use the battery shell as the bike frame’s outer shell, like the Buzz Cerana 2. When I leave town, I prefer to store the battery indoors (where temperature fluctuations are minimal). The bike is stored in a non-climate-controlled storage unit. So, I appreciate the frame not having a gaping hole that exposes internal wiring to the elements.

Additionally, Tenways included a throttle safety limiter. That prevents it from engaging until the bike crosses a rolling threshold of 5 mph. The design prevents the bike from lurching forward if the detachable throttle is bumped.

Critique: Payload & Weight Caveats

While the Wayfarer is an exceptional cruiser, it isn’t without its limits.

The most notable drawback is its maximum load capacity of 264–265 pounds. When you factor in the bike’s 66-pound fully outfitted weight, heavier riders could approach the frame’s rated ceiling. That leaves little wiggle room to haul heavy cargo on the rear rack.

If you need to carry heavy groceries or kid-haulers, a dedicated long-tail cargo e-bike might serve you better. Meaning, a cargo e-bike with a 400-pound capacity like the Tern GSD or Aventon Abound.

Additionally, the pure throttle range maxes out around 28 miles. To hit that 80-mile claim, you’ll need to keep the motor in lower pedal-assist modes and chip in some genuine muscle power on the flats.

One might ask, why put in a suspension seat post when you could put in a rear shock? Well, it keeps costs down and is easier to maintain. It might be a shortcut, but I do think it’s high reward.

Some riders prefer a more aggressive, forward-leaning ergonomics versus the leisurely couch-on-wheels. The former provides better cornering and a sportier handle.

Tenways Wayfarer E-Bike: Who It’s For

The electric Tenways Wayfarer is a great match for the everyday commuter, suburban explorer, and leisure rider who values a smooth ride over raw, brute power.

In the brand’s U.S. debut, this e-cruiser swaps the fat-bike aesthetic for a practical, all-terrain-esque profile that can ride across variable terrain from pavement to potholes. This e-bike feels at home on bike paths, on cement, on dirt, and on hard-packed gravel. It can even handle a smattering of ruts on double track.

Sure, it’s not as four-season and all-terrain-ready as more built-out e-bikes like the Aventon Aventure 3. And it won’t carry as much weight as cargo-tailored rides like the Specialized Haul LT, which has a 441-pound weight limit.

But the Wayfarer offers progressive technical elements — including a passcode-protected motor, Apple Find My integration, and turn signals — plus plush design details that make it punch above its price tier.
