There’s an assumption people make about outdoor gear that prioritizes circularity and sustainability. Many people expect to sacrifice durability and performance in exchange for these “greener” designs.

Osprey and Houdini wanted to change that. So this season, the two brands teamed up to design a line of four-season technical packs, dialed for backcountry skiing, climbing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. The packs are made from recycled materials, repairable, and (according to the brands) fully recyclable at the end of their useful lives.

On November 6, Osprey and Houdini unveiled the Allt pack line.

“Allt is proof that circularity-focused products do not compromise durability or performance,” Austin Kiefer, product designer at Osprey Packs, told GearJunkie.

Keifer said the pack was designed with the multisport alpinist in mind. He described it as a “single tool to climb peaks, ski down them, and explore those same peaks in the summer months on foot.”

Two Brands, One Mission: Osprey x Houdini Allt Pack Collab

Osprey has more than 50 years of experience designing high-quality technical outdoor packs. Houdini has been making outdoor apparel using cutting-edge textile technologies and innovative circular design principles since 1993. The two brands came together for this project, bonding over shared environmental values and a passion for making killer outdoor gear.

“The beauty of design collaborations across sectors is the cross-pollination of ideas, thought leadership, and expertise, allowing us to reach further, faster,” Eva Karlsson, chief creative officer at Houdini, told GearJunkie. “The co-creation of Allt is a great example.”

Allt, in Swedish, means “everything” — which is what these packs are designed to do. They’re dialed for skinning up mountains, ski mountaineering, approaching rock climbing routes, longer and more technical day hikes, and more. They’re also sustainably made and recyclable.

Technical Features

Largely made with waterproof X-Pac RX36 polyester fabric, the Allt is abrasion-resistant. It has a multiuse avalanche kit compartment for a shovel and probe. The pack allows for A-frame ski carry and has a rope compression strap and ice tool attachments. Other materials used in the pack are breathable, quick-drying, and water repellent, and the entire pack is PFAS-free.

“We lab tested many fabrics for durability and circularity while also field-testing to discover potential wear points,” Kiefer said. “Only through collaboration were we able to achieve such a rugged, high-performance, and sustainable product.”

Sustainable, Circular Design

Everything about the Allt was designed with a circular lifespan in mind. The main fabric is 70% recycled material, the liner is 100% recycled, and the mesh components are 75% recycled.

When your Allt is ready to be recycled after years of hard use, future recyclers will have options for reusing the materials. When ready to dispose of the gear, owners can send it back to the brand, which will then ensure it’s properly recycled.

“Early in the collaboration, we decided to make the Allt packs capable of being mechanically or chemically recycled, so that these backpacks could be spun or extruded back into high-performance yarn,” Kiefer said.

Fully Repairable

The Allt’s buckles are also made from bio-based POM (polyoxymethylene), and all of the Allt’s hardware components are removable and replaceable. That way, you can repair your pack if anything breaks, extending its life even further.

“One of the core collaborative philosophies, shared between Osprey and Houdini, was the need for these packs to be easily repaired or components replaced so we can extend the product life for decades,” Kiefer said. “These packs are tools first, and the user expects many years of use with our products before critical failures.”

The Allt is available on both the Osprey and Houdini websites. It’s also being sold through Jagged Edge, Hatchet Supply, and Windthrow retailers.
