Orlando may be located in Central Florida, but it’s surrounded by water. Arguably, the city is floating on water, as the Florida aquifer system is the world’s largest. It’s no wonder there are more than 100 lakes within the city limits.

You probably know about their world-class theme parks, but Orlando’s springs, lakes, and rivers are the big draw for outdoor recreation. Watersports enthusiasts come for the warm weather and clear waters to wakeboard, kayak, and paddleboard.

And let’s not forget the fishing. Orlando is a great destination for anglers, with lunker-laden lakes and access to saltwater fishing nearby. All these water-based activities take place outside, where you can immerse yourself in nature and see plenty of wildlife.

Adventure on the Water

One such example is Shingle Creek at Grande Lakes Resort, which marks the northern headwaters of the Everglades watershed. Seemingly tucked away from Orlando, this waterway offers a great way to paddle close to fish, shorebirds, and a great range of fauna that feels more coastal than it is.

You can paddle the waterway for up-close views of wildlife, including Margaret, a well-known alligator, or hike along its 12-mile stretch of multiuse trails. When you’re done exploring, take a siesta in a nearby pool cabana, spa, or float down a lazy river.

South of Orlando, the waterways break open into vast wetlands. In Boggy Creek, you can take a fanboat tour to explore those shallow waters with Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures. You’re all but guaranteed to see alligators and eagles. If you’re lucky, you might see a snail kite, an endangered raptor that calls this area home.

After alligators, the manatee is probably the most popular wildlife attraction in Florida. Orlando’s natural springs make the city and surrounding area a perfect place to observe these gentle giants in their native habitat. From fall to spring (roughly late November through March), manatees flock to the warm waters of natural springs and other estuaries.

These clear-water refuges make it easy to see manatees up close, by kayak or SUP, without disturbing them. Several tour companies, like Epic Paddle Adventures, offer a quick day trip from Orlando with all the equipment to make it accessible to visitors.

Orlando is a haven for wakeboarding, and one of the best places to get in on the action is Nona Adventure Park. Wake Nona is a top-ranked cable park for beginners. Experienced riders can use the park’s jumps and rails to dial their runs. Fun opportunities include the obstacle-style courses at Aqua Park, a climbing tower, or a more relaxed time spent in a cabana.

If you’re looking to go old school behind a boat, Paradise Cove Watersports offers wake surfing rentals for visitors. More watersport adventure rentals include paddleboards, kayaks, and jet skis.

Beyond the Waters

Not everything is about the water. You’ll find plenty of land-based ways to get your adrenaline. Orlando has several adventure parks with zip lines, ATVs, and other adrenaline-pumping activities.

Of course, you need to eat and drink to sustain all the energy you’ll burn. In Orlando, you’ll find several restaurants with ties to top chefs and celebrities. From Michelin-worthy fine dining to more relaxed restaurants, the city’s eateries offer a wide range of cuisines.

Orlando is a destination for more than its popular theme parks. From watersports to paddle tourism, you’ll find several ways to enjoy the city’s lakes and waterways amid abundant sunshine. Relaxing is built into the town’s vibe, too. Find more things to do in Orlando and plan a trip at Visit Orlando.
