When we see brands pitching in to support trail cleanup, we take note. OnX and Toyota will launch the Trail Revival Project, a nationwide initiative to protect and preserve access to multiuse trails on public lands.

Of course, they’ll need volunteers to help with the labor. That’s where you come in.

The goal of the project is to preserve trail access from restrictions or closure when not maintained and to protect public lands by minimizing the environmental impact of trails. Trail deterioration, overuse, obstacles like downed trees and debris, and under-resourced land management organizations can all lead to a loss of access to public lands.

“At a time when access to public lands is feeling increasingly uncertain, we’re inviting the outdoor community to help protect the places they love,” Frances Kershaw, onX brand director, said in a press release.

“This initiative is about more than just trail maintenance — it’s about coming together to safeguard our shared landscapes for the future.”

Trail Revival Project

OnX has built a reputation on its digital navigation and mobile-friendly mapping technology. And well, Toyota is a popular choice among the OHV crowd. Customers of both brands are invested in off-road trails.

There will be five Trail Revival Project events with additional support for local efforts that apply to the project. The first promotional event is May 3, in Mendocino National Forest, Calif. Another is scheduled for May 31, at the Famous Reading Outdoors OHV Park in Pennsylvania. The project will announce details for events in Colorado, Montana, and North Carolina later this spring.

Toyota Trucks will be there to transport gear, equipment, and volunteers. They’ll also haul out debris and trash to restore trails for wider use.

“Whether you’re out hiking, biking or overlanding, access is critical,” Mike Tripp of Toyota marketing said in a release. “As brands that engage with outdoor enthusiasts, we have a unique opportunity to rally our communities to protect the places we all love.”

A Call for Volunteers

The brands are there to organize and promote the effort, but volunteers will be doing the work. That means you!

Each event is a collaboration between local organizations, off-road clubs, and land management agencies. The Trail Revival Project is a chance for local volunteers to make an impact by clearing fallen trees and rebuilding trails. There will be advisors and mentors to pass on this knowledge. Such community efforts will help keep trails open, accessible, and safe.

Chainsaws are the workhorse tool for trail cleanup, and STIHL will have a large presence. Beyond improved trails, attendees have the added incentive of bringing one home. One in every 10 attendees will win a chainsaw to take away at the end of the event.

Grassroots Support

In addition to these planned events, onX and Toyota are encouraging off-road clubs to apply to host their own Trail Revival Project. If selected, the clubs stand to receive money and equipment to help make an impact in their own backyards.

This support includes $5,000 in funding and equipment like chainsaws and other trail tools. Efforts will also receive support, resources, and mentorship from Toyota and onX’s Access and Stewardship Program.

Individuals and clubs can sign up to volunteer or host a local event as part of the Trail Revival Project.

Trail restoration is nothing new from onX. From 2018 to 2023, it has helped secure or improve public access to 154,000 acres, and supported the maintenance and building of 255 miles of trails.
