Transporting important and expensive equipment often requires cutting foam pads to fit around each item. Such a fixed solution hinders repacking a hard case with different gear for a different mission.

To fix that problem, Pelican created the Re-Set system. It is a raised grid of high-density foam pegs that adjusts to fit around delicate gear. It forms a protective interior organization system for safely transporting camera equipment, hunting rifles, or communications devices.

The grid sits off the bottom of a case, so the foam pegs effectively float. This lets you place gear on top of the pegs and push down those needed to make room for it. Additionally, the pegs only need to slide down far enough to keep the top of your gear flush with the other pegs, creating a snug fit.

Each Re-Set kit comes with the plastic grids specifically sized to fit inside the brand’s Protector Long Cases. However, we can see where this system will expand to fit other hard cases as well.

Reconfigure to Match Gear

Since packing with this system doesn’t require removing the pegs, the Re-Set system can be adjusted or reset on the go. If you pick up a piece of new gear you want to protect inside a Pelican Long Case, you can push down a few more pegs to make room for it.

Before the next trip, you can pull out the plastic frame and push all the pegs back to the same level. This effectively resets the system back to square one — hence its name.

According to Pelican, the high-density foam pegs can withstand repeated use and adjustments. If they seem worn out, Pelican says you can twist them 45 degrees to refresh them for hundreds more configurations.

Who’s It For?

The Re-Set system kits are modular, though made to fit and work with a corresponding Pelican Protector Long case (the 1700, 1720, and 1750), so there’s the right amount of foam protection inside each.

Pelican Protector Long Cases are most popular among hunters who travel with a rifle and scope. However, photographers and tech-heavy travelers may use them to carry sensitive equipment, too.

That’s because the cases are advertised as watertight, dustproof, and impervious to extreme temperatures, and they come with an automatic purge valve. Additionally, the stainless steel hardware of the cases can hold up to rough transport, while polyurethane wheels help make hauling them easier and reliable.

That said, the basic kit of two grids (1700) may find use inside other cases, including existing Pelican models. The modular aspect of the grids wouldn’t be a constraint, but you may need to MacGyver the grid itself to stay in place inside that case.

For now, the Pelican Re-Set system is available in three kits and retails for $170-230. Pelican has plans to create kits for other cases in the future.
