“We’re out of ice” became an all-too-familiar phrase at my local grocery stores last summer. Living in a small mountain town has plenty of perks. But during peak tourist season, finding a bag of ice isn’t always one of them. Fortunately, I was gear testing the 45L EcoFlow GLACIER Classic Portable Fridge Freezer, a battery-powered refrigerator that doesn’t need ice. With dual-zone cooling, wired and wireless power options, and smartphone app controls, the GLACIER quickly made ice runs a thing of the past.

Unlike traditional coolers that require constant refills and turn into icy pools, the GLACIER Classic keeps food and drinks cold — or even frozen — without sacrificing storage space. EcoFlow first launched the GLACIER in 2023 with an included ice maker. The updated version, released in 2025, removes the ice maker in favor of increased storage capacity and a more streamlined design.

Designed for off-grid adventures, it can run on battery power alone or pair with solar panels for extended use. I brought it along on camping trips, road trips, and used it for grocery runs. Here’s where it excelled, and where it still has a few compromises.

Initial Impressions: Field Testing in Colorado’s High-Elevation Deserts

The EcoFlow GLACIER is available in three sizes: 35L, 55L, and 45L, which is the version I opted to test. Right off the bat, my first impression of the GLACIER was that it was sleekly designed with aesthetics in mind. It has a simple silhouette that can slide easily into a packed trunk or between car seats. 

With the battery charged and my camping gear packed, I set out to test how this eCooler held on a weekend in the mountains. Alongside field tests, I conducted indoor tests that included battery life, solar charging capabilities, and ice retention with no power.

Cooling Performance

The most important question for any cooler is simple: Can it actually keep things cold? The biggest advantage of an electric cooler like the EcoFlow GLACIER is that it doesn’t rely on ice. Instead, it actively cools its contents, freeing up storage and eliminating meltwater.

For my initial test, I plugged the GLACIER into a standard wall outlet and monitored how quickly it cooled. In just 30 minutes, the internal temperature dropped from 65°F to 25°F — an impressive performance for a completely empty cooler. I found it worked best when allowed to pre-chill for 15 to 30 minutes before loading it with food and drinks.

When the compressor kicks on, it’s impressively quiet. EcoFlow rates it at 38.5 dB, about the same volume as a small fan on its lowest setting. You’ll notice a bit of warm air exhausting from the side vents, so it’s important to leave a little clearance around the cooler while it’s operating.

Running the GLACIER on its optional battery or a connected solar panel may slightly slow the cooling process compared to shore power. But I found the difference negligible during real-world use.

I found that what also sets the GLACIER apart is the level of temperature control. You can dial in an exact temperature between -4°F and 68°F using the display or EcoFlow’s free smartphone app.

The included divider also transforms the 45L model into a dual-zone fridge and freezer. It allows you to keep drinks chilled on one side while storing frozen treats like ice cream and popsicles. For summer camping trips, that feature alone was a game-changer.

The onboard display and companion app show the cooler’s real-time internal temperature. That makes it easy to monitor performance and adjust settings as needed.

Battery Performance and Power Options

One of the GLACIER’s biggest strengths is its flexibility when it comes to power. I tested the cooler with EcoFlow’s optional plug-in battery and 60W solar panel, which gave me a few different ways to keep it running depending on where I was.

The removable battery was easily my favorite option. Once charged, I could drop it into the cooler and head out without worrying about finding an outlet or running a cable through the car. The EcoFlow app also displays the remaining battery life and estimated runtime, so I could check on it from the driver’s seat or rooftop tent instead of digging through the back of my truck.

Battery Runtime Test: My Results

In my testing, I found that the battery lasted for up to 43 hours of runtime in Eco mode and around 24 hours in Max mode, but those results depend heavily on the ambient temperature and cooling settings.

When I wanted to extend its runtime, I paired the GLACIER with EcoFlow’s 60W solar panel. It didn’t keep the battery topped off indefinitely under heavy cooling loads, but it did noticeably stop battery drain on sunny days, making it a worthwhile addition for longer camping trips or overlanding.

If you skip the battery, the GLACIER can still run from your vehicle’s 12V outlet or a standard AC power source, such as a household outlet or portable generator. Both options work well, but they also mean you’re tethered by a power cord. Personally, I found the cordless convenience of the battery to be one of the cooler’s biggest selling points.

In fact, I’d hesitate to recommend buying the GLACIER without it. EcoFlow frequently bundles the cooler with the battery, which dramatically improves its versatility. The battery transforms the GLACIER into a truly portable refrigerator, making it much easier to justify the investment.

Ice Retention

Like every cooler we test at GearJunkie, I wanted to see how well the EcoFlow GLACIER performed without electricity. While it’s designed to cool electronically, good insulation still matters, especially if you lose power, forget the battery at home, or simply need to rely on ice for a while.

To find out, I conducted our standard ice retention test in my home’s mudroom, where temperatures hovered between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the test. I filled the cooler roughly two-thirds full with ice, closed the lid, and let it sit without any external power.

Ice Test: Results

After the first 24 hours, the ice looked virtually untouched. It wasn’t until Day 3 that I noticed any meaningful melting, mostly among the cubes stored on the elevated shelf rather than the larger mass of ice below.

The biggest change came on Days 4 and 5. By Day 4, roughly half of the ice had melted, and by Day 5, only about a quarter of it remained.

By the evening of Day 6, the ice had completely melted.

For a cooler that’s engineered to eliminate the need for ice altogether, I found those results surprisingly impressive. The GLACIER’s insulation proved more than capable of preserving ice for nearly 6 days, giving it a valuable backup plan in a pinch. It’s reassuring to know the cooler can still function like a traditional high-end cooler when needed, rather than becoming a powerless box.

Standout Features

Beyond its cooling performance, the EcoFlow GLACIER distinguishes itself with a thoughtful suite of premium features. At this price point, you’d expect more than just an eCooler — and the GLACIER delivers.

Bluetooth-Enabled App

One of my favorite features was its Bluetooth-enabled companion app. Being able to adjust temperatures or check battery life from my phone was especially convenient when I was relaxing in my rooftop tent and didn’t feel like climbing down to the truck.

The app also displays real-time power usage and charging input, whether the cooler is running from AC power, the optional battery, or a connected solar panel.

Interior Light and Removable Divider

The GLACIER is equally well designed on the inside. An automatic interior light makes it easy to find food after dark, while the included storage basket and elevated shelf help keep smaller items organized and within reach.

The removable divider allows the 45L model to function as a dual-zone fridge and freezer, and when it’s not needed, it stores neatly inside the lid.

Unique, Removable Lid Design

That lid is another standout feature. It can hinge open from either side or be removed entirely, so you don’t have to worry about how the cooler is positioned in your vehicle. I especially appreciated this after sliding the GLACIER into my truck bed, where access can be limited depending on how gear is packed.

Portable Power Bank Capability

Finally, when paired with the optional battery, the GLACIER doubles as a portable power bank. Its USB-C output can charge laptops, phones, cameras, e-readers, and other electronics. As a freelancer who frequently works remotely from trailheads and campgrounds, I found this feature surprisingly useful and one that further separates the GLACIER from a traditional cooler.

Downsides

No electric cooler is perfect, and the EcoFlow GLACIER is no exception.

My biggest complaint is its weight. At 51 pounds empty, it’s already a hefty piece of gear. Once it’s loaded with food and drinks, moving it solo becomes a challenge. Unless you’re only carrying it a short distance, you’ll want a second person to help or a wagon to haul it around. EcoFlow now offers a compatible wagon for the GLACIER, but I’d still love to see future versions incorporate rugged wheels directly into the cooler itself to improve portability.

Because the GLACIER houses electronic components, it also requires a bit more care than a traditional cooler. You can’t simply hose it out after a trip, so cleaning takes a little more precision. Likewise, campers who regularly leave their gear exposed to the elements should be mindful to keep the GLACIER covered during wet weather.

Price is the other major hurdle. Depending on the configuration, the GLACIER 45L starts at $749 and can cost nearly $1,500 once you add the removable battery, solar panel, generator, and other accessories. That’s a significant investment for any cooler.

That said, I’d argue the battery is more of a necessity than an optional accessory. It unlocks the GLACIER’s greatest advantage of true cordless portability and dramatically expands where and how you can use it.

Even with those drawbacks, I came away impressed. Between its rapid cooling, quiet operation, flexible power options, and surprisingly effective insulation, the GLACIER delivers a premium experience.

Who It’s For

The EcoFlow GLACIER 45L is much more than an electric cooler — it’s a true portable refrigerator and freezer. Between its dual-zone cooling, removable battery, app controls, and multiple charging options, it brings many conveniences of a home fridge into the backcountry. That said, it’s not for everyone.

If you spend most weekends on the road, or live out of a vehicle, the GLACIER is easy to recommend. Overlanders, road trippers, anglers, boaters, and anyone embarking on extended camping adventures will appreciate never having to hunt down bags of ice or deal with soggy food. For these users, the convenience alone can justify the premium price over time.

If you’re an occasional camper, a quality rotomolded cooler will likely provide better value. It may require ice, but it will also cost a fraction of the price.

The biggest consideration beyond cost is weight. At 51 pounds before adding food or drinks, the GLACIER isn’t something you’ll want to carry very far without help. If portability is your top priority, look for a wheeled model or be prepared to phone a friend.

For everyone else, the GLACIER delivers exactly what it promises. It offers fast, reliable cooling with a premium build quality. And the freedom to leave bags of ice behind. It’s one of the most capable electric coolers I’ve tested. For those who spend serious time living out of their vehicle, it has the potential to change the way they camp.
