Chevrolet has just fired its latest shots in the most competitive and profitable automotive segment in America. The 2027 Silverado is brand-new, and Chevy is doing more for off-roaders than before. Think Z51 off-road standard on more 4×4 trucks, taller tires on Trail Boss, and Raptor-matching 35s on ZR2 — plus a pair of bigger V8 engines for even more rock-crushing torque.

Chevy just announced some details today, although many specs and pricing remain under wraps. Here’s what we know so far and what outdoor users can look forward to.

Nearly Every 2027 Silverado Gets Off-Road Equipment

Yes, Silverado 4×4 now comes with Chevrolet’s long-running Z71 off-road package as standard equipment. The package includes shocks and springs tuned for off-road driving, hill-descent control for steep and slippery grades, and skid plates to protect the delicate parts underneath.

It’s all a bit confusing, though, because Silverado is now the truck as well as a trim. It replaces LT in the lineup, so now it goes Work Truck, Custom, Silverado, High Country, and ZR2, with Trail Boss and Custom Trail Boss sprinkled in. So your Silverado is ready to go when there’s tough terrain.

ZR2 Gets Taller Rubber, and Bison Continues to Roam

Chevy’s changes to the ZR2 are more straightforward. For 2027, the truck still comes with a 2-inch lift and Multimatic’s killer DSSV dampers that can suck up just about any terrain. It now offers jounce dampers that kick in when the truck bottoms out, stopping it from slamming into the frame when you’re blasting through a desert or over rocks.

Full-sized trucks are all about the numbers, and there was one where the ZR2 fell behind. Its standard off-road tires measured just 33 inches tall, a number that is impressive but well behind Ford’s F-150 Raptor and the Ram TRX. Now Chevrolet has crammed 35s in there to match its competitors when it comes to driving over things.

The ZR2 Bison returns as well. American Expedition Vehicles is sending Chevy its front and rear bumpers, rocker guards, and thicker skidplates. The Bison gets the new tires, and it’s the new truck, but it doesn’t add anything else substantial this time.

Even the Trail Boss Trucks Get More Rubber

Both Custom Trail Boss and Trail Boss get upgrades as well. They both come with a 2-inch lift like the last generation, but Chevrolet has upgraded the 32-inch tires to 34s on both. Trail Boss trucks will also add visual identifiers like tow hooks, special wheel designs, and other small details, with red-edge seatbelts and trim-specific interior accents.

Chevrolet hasn’t announced specs for the new trucks. It loves to trickle out things like tow ratings and horsepower, but it’s a safe bet that the 2027 Silverado will at least match the 13,300-pound max tow rating of a properly equipped 2026. The same applies to the 2,380-pound maximum payload.

Two New V8s for 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

As for horsepower, the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado will offer two brand-new engine options. The 2.7L TurboMax four-cylinder carries over from 2026, and the 3.0L Duramax diesel fuel-sipper does too. Two new V8 engines, one with 5.7L and the other with 6.6, are both larger than the engines they replace.

The new generation of General Motors V8 should offer more power and torque. Chevy says the 6.6 will be the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in class — along with better fuel economy.

Apart from new styling, softening the sides, and tweaking the face, the 2027 Silverado will have some tech upgrades. A 16.3-inch center display means even more screen than before. It and the 12.2-inch digital dash are standard across the board, and if that’s not enough, then ZR2 and High Country add an 11.5-inch passenger screen.

Chevrolet plans to announce more details, including pricing, as the truck approaches production. That will happen before the end of the year, so stay tuned.
