Army’s newest drone and robotics talent went head-to-head at Victoria Barracks last month in the finals of Rise of the Drones and War of the Machines. The culmination of months of training, designing and testing at Battle Lab’s MakerSpace sites across the country had finals competitors assembling, configuring, flying and repairing first-person-view (FPV) drones and robotic ground systems.  The event represents a step forward in building Army’s uncrewed systems capability, with 161 new FPV drone pilots and 98 uncrewed ground vehicle operators trained through the MakerSpace program. I’m all about carrying a belt knife out hiking and exploring most of the time. In the colder months, I wear one all the time. I’m not sure if it’s because I subconsciously think I will need to fend for myself against a legion of ice monsters destined to take over our planet, or not. However, consciously, I know that my life in the outdoors in the winter is more demanding, and I find myself outdoors all the time in winter. That being the case, I was looking for something burly but compact to carry as I embraced the colder…

Relieved. That’s the only word for how I felt the first morning I stepped into Atomic Backland XTD Carbon touring boots ($1,140). After testing many boots that pinched, folded, or left hot spots by the second lap, I slid into these and immediately relaxed. The fit felt dialed without adding a footbed or a single shell punch. That never happens for me. And, the boot moved with an ease I usually only get from full-on lightweight touring models. Then, when I pointed skis downhill off Teton Pass, the boot showed surprising backbone for its weight. That combination — comfort, frictionless…

Packing a truck for a hunting trip is part logistics, part intuition. Every loadout is shaped by variables — weather, terrain, trip length, and who’s riding with you — but the goal is always the same: arrive with a camp that’s safe, efficient, and comfortable enough to recover for the next day’s hunt. After nearly a decade of loading a Ram 1500 for hunt and fish camps, I’ve learned that the best truck camps aren’t overpacked — they’re intentionally packed. Explore Ram LD Trucks Below is a system that works across seasons and styles of hunting. Step 1: Start With the…

Pro female climbers are achieving at the highest levels. Competition climbing’s most dominant athlete is a woman: two-time Olympic champion Janja Garnbret. In outdoor climbing, the gap between the hardest-ever climbs by men and women is minimal (5.15d versus 5.15c, and V17 versus V16). Some take this as evidence that the sport has overcome its unsavory history of sexism. It hasn’t. While, as early as 2015, some male climbers began arguing that paying special attention to things like first female ascents (FFAs) was no longer necessary and that any misogyny lingering within climbing was just a reflection of society at…

When a male hiker was stranded on a mountain near Phoenix for 13 hours last week, he got help from a surprising source: a weight-bearing drone. In a first-of-its-kind mission for the area, the Phoenix Fire Department used a DJI drone to send supplies to the injured hiker on Camelback Mountain, keeping him safe until rescuers could finally reach him in the morning. It all started last week, when Phoenix’s first responders received reports of a stranded hiker around 8 p.m. on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 16. They were able to locate the hiker using a helicopter, but decided…
