The wooden shaft flew true and the ridged edges of the stone head cut cleanly through the chest of the antelope. An hour later I was back in the cave knowing that for the first time in weeks, we would all go to bed with full bellies. “That thing is going to get you killed in the streets,” said a voice from back in the shadows. “We don’t have any streets yet. What thing?” “That stupid thing you call a spear. We hunt and fight with clubs, everybody knows that. You bash them over the head, that’s how it’s done.…
The 300 Blackout Vs 5.56 conversation is like debating apples and oranges. The Bright Line Between 300 Blackout and 5.56 NATO:Similarities between the cartridges end with them sharing the same case and being tailored for military use. Thanks to its higher velocities, the 5.56 is much more adept at longer ranges. The standard .22-caliber also performs better out a longer barrel.300 Blackout is less finicky about barrel length and is excellent out of SBRs.The .30-caliber is hands down the more suppressible of the two, with ample subsonic loads available.By now, most everybody knows the 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge. Its fortunes are tied to America’s…
Happy 17th Birthday to Us In a wild SSD / SOLSYS mashup, our first post in 2008 gave a hint of what was to come. If you’ve seen “2001: A Space Odyssey” you may have caught Astronaut Dave Bowman utter something about something wonderful happening…and here it is. What a long strange trip it’s been… This entry was posted on Saturday, May 17th, 2025 at 10:00 and is filed under Admin. You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0 feed. Learn More For nearly 25 years, Colorado nonprofit First Descents has taken cancer survivors on free weeklong trips into the wilderness. The internal struggle of feeling powerless against a potentially fatal illness can last far longer than physical symptoms, and First Descents aims to help these survivors regain confidence in both mind and body. So it was with “profound heartbreak” that the organization announced the sudden death of its longtime CEO, Ryan O’Donoghue, this week. For 14 years, O’Donoghue served as an effective leader of the…
FORT GEORGE MEADE, Md. — The average person probably believes the worlds of the military and fashion are mutually exclusive. Fashion is a popular style or trend that often includes rare, high-priced wearable art… while the military prides itself on utilitarianism, a calling born of necessity while wearing clothing designed for heavy wear-and-tear. It may come as a surprise, therefore, that the U.S. Army’s fondness for design extends to more than just the most updated lethal weaponry, vehicles and warfare tactics. Its impact on fashion can be seen daily worldwide, without the consumer realizing its history. Here are five major…

The Trump administration wants to open National Parks to mining, and it might have a legal avenue to move forward. On April 8, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced that an Australian mining company, Dateline Resources, LTG, had been given the go-ahead to continue operating an unauthorized mine in the Mojave National Preserve. The National Park System (NPS) told the LA Times that it has not received or approved any plan for this operation, called Colosseum Mine, which may be the first of more to come. Records obtained by PEER through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request revealed that…

Steady rain pelts my tent, and the ominous sound of wind whipping through the trees outside sends a chill down my spine. It’s my first time in Alaska, and the third straight day of rain and 40-degree temps. While the tent exaggerates the severity of the rain, it is steadily raining, and there is no end in sight. With a bleak forecast ahead, I tell myself there is no time like the present, and slip into my waders, boots, and rain jacket and head out to see if the fish will bite despite the conditions. My fly fishing adventures are…
An interesting fixed blade is on the way from Boker and collaborator Brent Michael Smith, who works under the shop name of Bald Man Knife & Tool. They have come together to create the Thicker Clipper, a fixed blade that lives up to its name while still staying in or near the EDC fixed blade class. This is in fact a very faithful production translation of Smith’s custom original. The Thicker Clipper straddles the line between an everyday carry and hard use fixed blade – not to say, of course, that these have to be mutually exclusive categories. The 2.14-inch…
