When an unimaginable situation suddenly becomes real, it’s easy to understand proper protection. Seeing is believing, especially when it comes to carrying pepper spray — and actually putting it to critical use in the field. And when Curtis Matwishyn saw a black bear in Saskatchewan’s Waskesiu–Prince Albert National Park, he certainly became a believer. Matwishyn, a wildland firefighter and nature photographer, first spotted the young bear 100 yards off a trail and began snapping some photos. When the bear followed him down the trail and then off it (in his attempts to evade), Matwishyn put down his camera and began…
We recently sat down with Alex Bohl from Trajectory Arms to discuss how you can avoid common and costly mistakes when building an AR-15. As a professional builder, Alex knows his way around the AR-15, and has a unique perspective on the tools and parts needed to successfully build a hard-use AR. Q: How is being a professional builder different from being a hobbyist? Alex Bohl, Trajectory Arms – Last year, we moved to a commercial location, as prior, we were doing work out of a shop in my basement. Moving allowed us to buy machinery, hire help, and better…
As a major battleground in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, Virginia is home to many important historical sites and public lands, with 22 areas managed by the National Park Service (NPS). Directly adjacent to the nation’s capital is also the world’s data center capital. As data center construction has exploded in Northern Virginia (NOVA), this technological and commercial development has butted up against historic battlefields and other public lands. Across the country, many local communities have organized to oppose data centers, and historic preservation and conservation organizations in these areas of Virginia have joined that fight. Here’s what’s behind the…
First responders in Phoenix are accustomed to frequent rescues of hikers, who often underestimate the Southwestern city’s infamous heat. But this weekend saw a hiker in need of emergency rescue for a very different reason: an attack from a swarm of bees. According to the Phoenix Fire Department, an unidentified hiker was near the summit of Lookout Mountain on Saturday morning when he was stung many times. In fact, first responders said the adult male was stung more than 100 times. The injuries were bad enough that he was unable to descend from the mountain without help. So Phoenix firefighters…

By Tom Laemlein Posted in #History At the National Museum of the United States Air Force, many visitors will see an unfamiliar aircraft at the entrance to the WWII gallery. The museum’s display of the gleaming silver fighter coded “86” on the fuselage, features a pilot boarding the plane in his pajamas, with an M1911 pistol belt fastened around his waist. That pilot was 2nd Lt. Philip M. Rasmussen of the 46th Pursuit Squadron, based at Wheeler Field on Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. His aircraft was a Curtiss P-36A Hawk fighter, one of four that managed…
The Stio Skyrider gives homage to the brand’s Western heritage — and at less than half the price of Stio’s other ski jackets, it comes at a value. Many hardshells on the market look nearly identical to each other: sleek, technical, and potentially a little blocky. Not all, of course, but quite a few. But the Skyrider leans into a different vibe. With a slightly Western, workwear-inspired style and a textured canvas face fabric, it manages to feel both rugged and a little fun. After a week of testing across Aspen Snowmass — including downhill days at Aspen Mountain, Snowmass,…
I ran across this great article form the May-June, 1972, issue of Infantry Magazine by Lieutenant Colonel Larry S. Mickel. It concerns the history of the canteen cup, which was near and dear to many a Soldier’s heart from the majority of the 20th century. Here’s the text: The Army’s continuing search for a “better” canteen cup is reminiscent of Sir Gawain’s quest for the Holy Grail. Inthat respect, this chalice of infinite use has once again been modified to meet the fighting man’s standards. But before lauding its most recent modification, we should take a look at the developmental…
