EJK59M U.S. Army soldier from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division pulls security next to a M2 Bradley Infantry…
Shopping for outdoorsy campers and backpackers might seem like an easy task at first. But when you walk into an REI or start perusing a site like Backcountry, the sheer volume of brands and products can be overwhelming, even paralyzing. And the constant flow of new designs and types of products is hard to keep up with. That’s what we’re here for, though. We’ve been keeping tabs, taking notes, and reviewing the best camping gear on the market all year. This curated list is a guide to some of our favorite camping gift ideas — the ones that we’ll be buying for…
Vincent Rizzo continues his bird series at Kizer with a new fixed blade model, called the Rook. Headed for shelves later this year, the Rook is Rizzo’s personalized take on the famous Nessmuk profile. While many, many makers have put their own spin on the Nessmuk over the years, and brought their own particular magic to it; but always, the “Nessmukness” is there, a design both unmistakable and proven over many years. It belongs in the “quirky but capable” category that profiles like the sheepsfoot and Wharncliffe occupy – a pattern that excels thanks to, not in spite of, its…
Whether you’re a hunter, hiker, boater, or fashionista, there’s a hot new pair of shoes for you this week. Speedland released a hunting boot in collaboration with Cam Hanes that’s all about speed and mobility. The North Face teamed up with fashion brand Cecilie Bahnsen for a down skirt, boots, and more with distinctive floral designs. And sneaker company Veja is getting into the outdoors with its first trail shoe. If you’re more excited to put on your ski boots than your hiking boots, good news: Fjällräven released a new ski kit collection, and Stellar Equipment dropped an ultralight insulated…
Serrations aren’t everyone’s favorite, but one thing is undeniable: Spyderco knows how to make them perform. I’ve tested serrated Chaparrals and even the semi-serrated CPM-M4 Tenacious, but the Salt Chief in Magnacut takes this to another level. Magnacut behaves similarly to CPM-4V but is far more stainless, which explains why the Salt Series (like this Chief) thrives in humid and coastal conditions. My first Chief, a special edition in CPM-4V nicknamed Hellboy, was already a beast — and this lightweight Salt Chief has teeth that remind me of a Nine Inch Nails album! I met Trent Reznor once (frontman of Nine Inch Nails). It was at the…
Day trips driving scenic travel routes in the mountains during the summer and fall months are a great way to relax and enjoy everything nature offers. Exploring backroads can bring unexpected joys and seldom cause concerns related to making one’s way from Point A to Point B. However, when winter arrives, those docile backroads and two-track trails that took mere minutes to drive a mile in the summer can take hours and pose some significant driving challenges because of snow. The deeper the snow, the more difficult and dangerous the driving becomes. Top Snow Wheeling Tips While tackling backroads in…
We got to spend a day with professional Fly Fishing guide Cade (@utahfly on Instagram) to learn about fly fishing and find out what knife is in his pocket! We also got to check out Fly Fish Food, the place he works, which is one of the largest fly fishing stores in the world! Huge thanks to Fly Fish Food for collaborating on this video with us. This was not as much of a knife video as I was expecting, but great cinematography. Doesn’t look like Cade needs to do much in the way of chopping wood where he guides.…
CAMP GRAYLING, Mich., Oct. 30, 2025 — For the first time, a U.S. soldier—not a trained aviator—planned and executed real-world missions in military exercises with Lockheed Martin Sikorsky’s [NYSE: LMT] Optionally Piloted (OPV) Black Hawk helicopter, powered by MATRIX™ technology. In partnership with the Joint Personnel Recovery Agency and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Sikorsky fielded the OPV Black Hawk aircraft at Northern Strike 25-2 in August to demonstrate, in an operational environment, how an autonomous Black Hawk can expand mission reach and reduce risk to soldiers. A U.S. Army National Guard Sergeant First Class, trained in less than an hour became…
When I was training for my first triathlon, every morning started with a several-hundred-yard swim in the pool at my gym. Staring at that black line at the bottom of the pool, lap after lap, my mind went numb. Then I got a waterproof iPod Shuffle from this new company called H2O Audio, and my boredom issue was solved. Ten years later, H2O Audio is still providing swimmers with audio, but now its focus is on headphones. The company’s latest waterproof bone conduction headphone, the Sonar 2 Pro ($150), is about half the size of its predecessor, stores up to…
I recently received a True 4” SYK Fillet Knife to test. I took it on a Redfishing trip in Louisiana with Native Adventures, but didn’t have an application to test it on that week, since we were catching big fish. But two weeks later, I had a crappie fishing trip in Oregon. I thought this was the trip that I’ll test it out on. On the Oregon trip, I caught half a cooler of nice crappie in 4 ½-hours. I didn’t get home until midnight, so I threw a bag of ice on top of the fish to hold them…
