A small, seemingly innocuous update is sometimes all a piece of gear needs to become a near-perfect design. For example, Fenix’s PD36R ACE is now “near perfection” just by adding USB-C charging. Turtlebox did the same thing with waterproof speakers, just by taking its flagship design and shrinking it down to the Ranger. With the Garmin Instinct Crossover AMOLED, the beloved technology brand has finally made a hybrid watch that looks and feels like the premium product that it is — just by adding a better display. Garmin first released its Crossover lineup in 2022, blending smartwatch technology with functional…

It brings the two companies,…
I would recommend keeping some tissues handy for this one. The documentary Ofrenda follows endurance athlete Sara Aranda as she attempts to set the first female record for one of the most brutal stretches of terrain in the United States. But it’s Aranda’s emotional battle — and the heart-wrenching poetry that accompanies it — that makes this short film so compelling. “To inherit is often to carry an unknown shape that lingers in the dark, even if that shape has a name: BRCA1,” Aranda narrates early on in the movie. During Aranda’s college years, her mother was diagnosed with BRCA1, a genetic…
I booked a 2-week trip to Iceland in September, knowing the weather might be rainy and unpredictable. Still, I hadn’t anticipated the amount of cold and muck that such conditions create in that part of the world. Thankfully, I’d packed my Merry People Tully Ankle Rain Boots. Whether I was traipsing through puddles at a campsite, enduring a brief sunshower in the capital city of Reykjavik, or hiking through the mist at some of Europe’s largest waterfalls, these boots kept my feet dry and warm. Plus, the platform sole on the bottom of these gumboots gave me the confidence to…
Something’s in the air…..it’s Nessmuk season in the knife world. We recently covered the Rook, a fixed blade from Kizer based on the venerable outdoors pattern, and now we’re looking at the Outlaw Muk, a folder that takes the Nessmuk in an entirely different direction. Designer Trey Sprinkle is a part-time knife maker (and a YouTuber), and this is his first production knife collaboration. Sprinkle often goes by “American Outlaw” online, and the tactical/hard use aesthetic implied by that moniker comes out in full force in the design of the Outlaw Muk. Even if it were called something like “The…

Learn More There’s an assumption people make about outdoor gear that prioritizes circularity and sustainability. Many people expect to sacrifice durability and performance in exchange for these “greener” designs. Osprey and Houdini wanted to change that. So this season, the two brands teamed up to design a line of four-season technical packs, dialed for backcountry skiing, climbing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. The packs are made from recycled materials, repairable, and (according to the brands) fully recyclable at the end of their useful lives. On November…

If you own one of the following Lezyne bike pumps, you may want to stop using it. The California-based brand announced a recall on Thursday for about 7,500 of its bike pumps for a manufacturing issue. The pumps’ canisters can forcefully eject from the base when pressurized, posing a risk of serious injury from impact to the user or bystanders, according to a recall notice published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Lezyne announced the recall after identifying one report of serious facial injuries caused by the defect. This recall includes two models of Lezyne bicycle floor pumps: the…
