By Will Dabbs, MD Posted in #History Despite around-the-clock bombing by British and American heavy bombers, the Germans during World War II produced an ever-increasing volume of advanced military materiel right up until the end of the war. Even though they had terribly limited resources and were being squeezed on all sides, they still managed to field the first true assault rifle, genre-defining attack submarines, and surface-to-surface missile systems that the rest of the world would take a generation to best. However, what they really excelled at was jet airplanes. The Americans had the P59 Airacomet, and…
Blast From The Past – The Mojave Travel Shirt from Beyond Clothing We are reach by way back into the SSD archives for this one. In May of 2010 we first wrote about a “Travel Shirt” whipped up by Beyond Clothing founder Scott Jones in 2009. This “Travel Shirt” was originally a one-off that he made for himself. It is a waist length design with mandarin collar, chest and sleeve pockets made from a lightweight material. It almost has a Star Wars vibe. I harangued him about it and eventually he added it to the line up at Beyond. Now…

I was filled with anticipation as I pushed the bow of my buddy’s drift boat off the concrete ramp. Spring bass fishing had been heating up, and this was one of those classic “guide’s day off” trips. Just a crew of grimy fish bums, heading off to explore on a scouting mission. The float we were embarking on is one of those spots that changes with the seasons. If the fish had moved up from the larger river below, it was sure to be an epic day. If they hadn’t, it was going to suck. Late February can go either…

Even though I’ve been backpacking for over a decade, there’s one perennial problem I can’t seem to solve. No matter what combo of pants, pack, and shirt I choose, I’m either left with a wedgie or the hip belt pack resting on my skin. The latter results in bruising and chafing, especially as the miles on the trail add up. Thus, when I first heard about Allover Apparel’s Lookout Overalls, overalls made for outdoor activities, I was intrigued. Since it’s a one-piece pair of pants, with no gap between the torso and legs, maybe my problem would be solved. There…
