Many people can’t afford to spend $500-2,000 on a set of hunting binoculars. It’s just not that realistic because hunting can be expensive. At minimum, you need a weapon of some sort, warm clothes, boots, gas to get to your hunting grounds, tags, and licenses … the list goes on and on. After all of that, it can be tough to justify expensive optics. That’s why I think “budget” binoculars are just as important to review as high-end ones. There are numerous options available in the $150-250 price range, and for many hunters, that’s as much as they can afford.…
Liberty Safes has just announced a new gun cabinet that’s manufactured and assembled in the U.S. Built with 14-gauge steel, these entry level residential security containers from Liberty Safes are designed to hold either 14 or 18 guns. They also present American consumers with a better-quality option for a basic gun storage solution that is made to higher standards, as opposed to most competing mass-produced gun cabinets that are manufactured overseas. As entry level firearms storage security containers, these are affordably priced with the MSRP of the 18-gun model at $399 and the slightly smaller 14-gun cabinet at $359 and…
Earlier this month we touched bases with Rivery Manufacturing, formerly Rivery CNC, a shop that changed its name to suit its growing ambitions and built on the continuing success of their Zero utility knife. Now Rivery is seeking funding on Kickstarter for the Zero-G, a sequel to that flagship, fidget friendly piece. The core concept with the Zero-G remains the same as its predecessor: the classic replaceable blade utility knife in a premium, knife enthusiast-approved chassis. The blade is manually deployed by sliding the show-side scale forward; pulled back on the scale retracts the blade with the help of a…

If you had told me a year ago that my favorite pair of pants would be joggers, I would have laughed in your face. I would have found it even more ridiculous if you told me that I would be wearing them while fishing. Joggers bring to mind lazy Saturday mornings, grabbing coffee in Suburbia. Not outdoor pursuits. However, my line of work requires that I keep an open mind and eliminate bias when it comes to assessing outdoor equipment. That includes negative bias, which I clearly have against joggers. This spring, I’ve had the opportunity to test out the…
By Robert A. Sadowski Posted in #Gear Events always seem to go sideways when you least expect it, like when a fun day at the range turns sour and you discover your red dot has dead batteries. Or, the rim of a cartridge case breaks off, leaving a spent shell in the chamber of your AR. The right equipment can turn a problem into just a momentary blip on your range day. Sometimes it’s as simple as having oil for a dry AR-15. Other times, you might need a specialized tool. Fundamentally, if you prepare for the…
When I was coming up as a new bowhunter, the standard release everyone was given was an index-style release aid. It was the easiest transition from gun hunting to bowhunting. Fast forward to the present day, and I’d argue that the standard is slowly moving toward handheld releases. More specifically, a thumb release. They offer a natural, open-handed feel at full draw but still provide the shooter with the ability to send an arrow quickly if need be for hunting. I’ve used a lot of thumb releases through the years, but none of them are quite like the new Shadow…
On June 23, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) Deputy Director Robert Cekada signed ATF Ruling 2025-1 and Ruling 2025-2. The documents reverse bans on importation for civilian use of “dual use” barrels and the non-lethal marking rounds often used for law enforcement and military force-on-force training exercises, respectively. The barrel restriction was put in place in 2005. The marking cartridge ban followed in 2023. The reinterpretation of previous BATFE rulings does not require a 90-day public comment period, rendering the decision effective immediately. Barrels The so-called dual-use barrel restriction began when BATFE ruled they fell under…
