Getting a good night’s sleep in the backcountry is paramount for recovery and performance on demanding backcountry trips. Recovery matters, and a sleeping pad plays a big role in whether you wake up ready to hunt or ready to throw your entire sleep system off a ridge. A bad sleeping pad can make for a bad night fast. For people who go in deep, a pad needs to be light, packable, warm, durable, and comfortable enough to actually sleep on. The NEMO Tensor All-Season checks a lot of those boxes. In short: Backcountry folks looking for a packable, ultralight sleeping…

Wildfires are an inextricable element of land management, but the last few years have seen historically devastating fires: the massive Palisades fire in Los Angeles, the deadly blazes on Maui, and the largest-ever fire in Grand Canyon National Park. In light of these destructive fires, it is natural to assume that climate change has led to an increase in wildfires over the last few decades. But scientists don’t make assumptions, and a new study reveals how both human-caused and naturally occurring wildfires have changed over time in the American West. The Study Amirhossein Montazeri and other authors published “Spatial and…

Chambered in 5.56mm NATO, Colt Canada was able to quickly bring the project to fruition due to improvement efforts which have been ongoing. I was able to photograph and fire both variants at Rampart Range Day. These photos are configured as per the contract, including optics and outfitted with the Strategic Sciences Corporation Multi…
Massive wildfires have become tragically common in the United States. But for national park lovers, the Dragon Bravo fire hurt more than most. The blaze that erupted on Grand Canyon National Park’s North Rim last summer devastated the park, burning nearly 150,000 acres and destroying over a dozen buildings, including the historic Grand Canyon Lodge. After a prolonged closure, the North Rim reopened to visitors last week. That’s good news for those planning to visit the park during summer vacation — especially hikers. The North Kaibab Trail has reopened, allowing hikers to reach the canyon’s bottom by starting from the North…
By Clayton Walker Posted in #Gear To me, there’s nothing quite as sad as a well-made machine not being used in the role for which it was created. Life’s too short for Corvettes that only sit in climate-controlled garages, beautiful timepieces that won’t ever be strapped to a wrist, or “safe queen” 1911’s that never see trigger time. By the same token, I know far too many people who don’t carry or use the knife they want because they don’t want to muck it up or dull the factory edge. While today’s tips won’t do anything to…
