Last in our recent spate of TOPS coverage is the Ontario XL Hunter. Whereas the last few new for 2026 TOPS pieces were in-house designs, the Ontario XL Hunter is actually a collaboration with another knife shop – can you guess which one? Okay, not a difficult question to be fair, but it is an interesting story nevertheless. Ontario Knife Company brought TOPS onboard to give one of their Old Hickory models the once-over, enhancing the proven outdoor classic with TOPS’s well-deserved reputation for ultra-rugged build quality. The result is something that underlines all the good qualities of the original…
This was shared by Spuhr on Instagram. When the Picatinny rail (MIL-STD-1913) was originally designed, it was intended to use only the 45-degree angled surfaces for clamping and reference (highlighted in green on the drawing). The tolerance to the top flat surface was deliberately made very large. Advantages of the original design (green surfaces): • A QD mount can be attached and detached on a huge variety of rails with extremely tight control — total width tolerance is only about 0.1 mm! • This makes the system very forgiving of manufacturing variations between different rails. Disadvantages: • The mount will…
One of the vehicles I learned to drive on wore Kumho tires for many years. Now, admittedly, that Mk4 Volkswagen Golf TDI lacked any performance panache or off-road capability. But the treadwear durability, confidence in wet and dry, and pricing all worked well for my family’s budget. I never even realized Kumho also produced an all-terrain tire until the company offered to send me a set of the Road Venture AT52 to test. Given some elements of curiosity after those positive impressions from my teenage years, plus the wide range of sizes available, I took a leap of faith. I’m…

Alabama rigs, also known as A-rigs or umbrella rigs, can seem intimidating if you’ve never thrown one. There are wild wires and blades everywhere, multiple soft plastics, and the thing looks like a chandelier. It certainly doesn’t look like something you just tie on and cast, which is true, but avoiding the A-rig is a big mistake. The fact of the matter is, A-rigs are one of the most effective bass fishing lures ever created. You can slow roll it in deep water, burn it around shallow structure, twitch and pop it, and everything in between. Its versatility and effectiveness…
