No matter how prepared you might be when you go camping, you’re still vulnerable in a tent, camper, or van. Hungry bears, hostile humans, and even flesh-eating zombies could be lurking. And a thin nylon wall or plywood siding isn’t going to stop them if they’re intent on getting to you. Camping shelters protect you from the elements, and that’s about it.

Except for the Mammoth Overland Xtinction Level Escape (XLE) camper. This 18-foot, 4.2-inch, 4,300-pound behemoth tow-along trailer is complete with bulletproof glass, deployable flare guns, remote-activated “sonic defense” and “quad bear defense” systems, 360-degree night-vision CCTV, and much, much more.

For all intents and purposes, this is a bunker on wheels with 22 inches of ground clearance for the most prepared (and potentially paranoid) campers. And it will only set you back $123,994.

“XLE is what happens when you stop asking ‘how capable can a trailer be?’ And start asking ‘how capable do we want it to be?’ This team built something I genuinely didn’t think was possible,” Mammoth Overland president Scott Taylor said. “XLE isn’t just a trailer; it’s a mobile operations center.”

Xtinction Level Escape Trailer: Mammoth Overland’s Burliest Camper

GearJunkie gets a lot of apocalypse-vehicle and prepper pitches. Most of them are flimsy marketing schemes that never make it past the Kickstarter phase. Some are real products, but are cheaply or clumsily designed. So I almost scrolled past the Mammoth Overland XLE pitch. However, as I read it, I quickly realized this wasn’t some half-assed survival/camping combo trailer. It’s more akin to a tank.

“Pressurized cabin with dual medical-grade HEPA filtration and bulletproof windows keeps occupants safe from whatever the world throws at them — weather, wildlife, or worse,” the press release describes. “[360 degrees] night-vision CCTV, remote-activated sonic defense, a deployable 37-millimeter flare launcher, and quad bear-deterrent systems deliver total perimeter awareness and non-lethal response capability.”

Sonic defense system

The sonic defense system is a 112-decibel air horn, Mammoth Overland told GearJunkie, and the quad bear deterrant system has “Four separate dispersal locations on the trailer [that] spray the entire perimeter in a 25′ radius, including directly the back door.”

Mammoth Overland used aerospace-grade 6061-T6 aluminum in the XTE. There is no wood in its construction at all. It’s built on the brand’s full-height Tall Boy platform, standing 9 feet tall and offering 22 inches of ground clearance. It also has a 1,200Ah battery system, a 400W solar array, dual propane, and a portable generator that provides several levels of backup energy.

Inside, the camper is just as spacious as the Mammoth Overland Tall Boy. It also has a 12V air conditioning system, a 45L 12V internal fridge, and an onboard water filtration system. The reinforced rear vault door uses a multi-point locking system, and spring-assisted windows have remote blast shields. There’s even a dedicated space for firearms and other valuables, with a dual long-rifle mount, a gun safe, and an under-mattress safe.

“A rooftop observation deck with dual standing platforms, a rapid-access roof escape hatch, and six remote strobe units complete the picture,” the description reads.

It’s the next evolution of Mammoth Overland’s prior Extinction Level Event (ELE) trailer, combined with its more spacious Tall Boy. It’s designed for adventure families that want to be ready for any situation, according to the brand.

“With the ELE we proved that an off-road trailer could be truly self-sufficient and secure,” said Taylor. “XLE takes that proof of concept and scales it up. This is the trailer for people who want a real basecamp — somewhere they can operate out of, not just sleep in.”

Rearof the XLE with door open

Given the current state of the world, a mobile apocalypse bunker is something many people wouldn’t mind keeping parked in their driveways. The $123,994 price tag is certainly a heavy hit. Even compared with similarly sized Airstreams, the XLE is nearly twice the price.

You get what you pay for, though. Like the brand’s previous ELE Trailer, the XLE is a premium camper trailer made with high-end materials (read: very expensive). It’s the kind of thing one might imagine Mark Zuckerberg or Jeff Bezos storing at their underground bunkers, so they can still take weekend outings with the fam, post-apocalypse.

If you find yourself among those who can afford such a trailer, Mammoth Overland is currently accepting XLE deposits. Each camper is built to order, and deliveries are expected to begin in late 2026. It debuts at the Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Ariz., May 15–17.
