When the snow starts to fall, Mammoth Lakes becomes the kind of winter destination that keeps people coming back year after year. Set high in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, this little ski town delivers on big mountain adventure — whatever that means for you.

From perfectly groomed runs to fresh powder days, cozy lodges, and family-friendly fun, Mammoth Lakes has everything you need for an unforgettable winter trip. Here’s a look at what makes this mountain town such a special place for snow-filled fun.

In Mammoth Lakes, Winter Is King

There’s nothing quite like waking up in Mammoth Lakes after a fresh snowfall. The winter air is crisp. Mammoth Mountain and the Sherwin Range are gleaming. And the powder-filled ski slopes are calling your name. Here, winter doesn’t just make an appearance. It reigns supreme.

With one of the longest ski seasons in North America, Mammoth Mountain often keeps the lifts spinning long after other resorts have packed up their winter gear and moved on to summer activities. Add that to the resort’s other impressive stats — 3,500 acres of skiable terrain, an average of 400+ inches of snowfall annually, and the highest lift-served summit in the state at 11,053 feet — and it’s easy to see why Mammoth Mountain truly lives up to its name.

Whether you’re chasing that heart-racing rush down the slopes or pausing at the summit to take in views of the Minarets, Mammoth Lakes delivers a winter experience that’s as fulfilling as it is enduring.

Travel Tip

Want to skip the lift lines and have the mountain to yourself? Visit midweek for a more chill experience.

Adventure Responsibly

✅ Ride responsibly
✅ Respect the rules of the slopes
✅ Watch out for other skiers

There’s Winter Fun for All Ages

Of course, not everyone in your crew has to be a powder hound. Mammoth Lakes offers snowy adventures to suit every vibe. Hit up Wooly’s Adventure Summit for lap after lap of tow-assisted tubing or make your own fun building a snowman.

On the cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails in the Mammoth Lakes Basin and Shady Rest, an afternoon of romping in the woods can easily become one of the most memorable moments of your trip as you explore a real-life winter wonderland.

Beginner skiers and snowboarders and family members who skip the downhill sports don’t have to miss out on the experience at the summit. The gondola at Main Lodge offers scenic rides to soak in the views at the top of the Sierra.

When it’s time to warm up, the charming ski town experience continues off the slopes. Cozy chalet hangs, toasty drinks by the fire, boutique shopping, bowling, and indoor ice skating at the newly opened Mammoth Lakes Community Recreation Center (CRC) keep the good times going, even indoors.

Travel Tip

Be sure to layer up. A base layer, insulated midlayer, and waterproof outer shell are key. With so many bluebird days, the temps can vary widely.

Adventure Responsibly

✅ Bring everything you need
✅ Plan ahead for winter weather
✅ Carry out what you bring in

Midweek Is Always a Good Move

Here’s a local secret: Mammoth Lakes really shines midweek. On these less-visited days, you get the mountain to yourself. Shorter lift lines, fewer crowds, and wide-open runs mean more time to make fresh tracks. Plus, midweek often means better deals on lodging, dining, and rentals. Do you really need any more excuses to sneak away for a few extra days of adventure, where your only agenda is carving up the mountain and soaking in the alpine magic?

Travel Tip

Be one of the first guests to stay at the brand-new Limelight Mammoth, a luxury hotel that’s opening in December.

Adventure Responsibly

✅ Be prepared for winter driving conditions
✅ Travel on off-days to minimize impact
✅ Leave this place as beautiful as you found it
