A 51-year-old woman’s body was found floating in the East River near Queens on Sunday morning, according to a New York City police spokesperson.
Police responded at 11:15 a.m. to a 911 call and found Sharon Shao dead in the water by Fort Totten Park near Totten Road and Cross Island Boulevard.
Shao was found about 1.7 miles from her home in Flushing, according to police.
Police also found blood in a white Mercedes that was parked nearby. While the case is still actively being investigated, police are trying to determine if Shao was the victim of a crime, according to ABC7.

The park is home to the 533rd Brigade of the U.S. Army Reserve and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. It is also partially used by the NYPD and FDNY as a training center. Although it is a public park with a refurbished visitor’s center and a museum about Fort Totten’s history, it is typically monitored with officers at all times.
The medical examiner’s office will make their final determination on what Shao’s cause of death was on Tuesday, according to a spokesperson.
