  • An Illinois woman was sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing her longtime boyfriend, a retired police chief
  • Prosecutors said Marcy Oglesby, 53, poisoned Richard “Rick” Young’s food and drinks with eye drops over several months, leading to his death in November 2021
  • Nearly a year later, Young’s decomposed remains were found in a storage unit located across the street from their home

An Illinois woman has learned her fate after killing her longtime boyfriend, a former police chief, and then hiding his body in a storage unit.

Marcy Oglesby, 53, was sentenced to 50 years in prison on Monday, Oct. 27 in connection with the 2021 death of retired Maquon Police Chief Richard “Rick” Young,” according to local news stations KWQC, WMBD, and WQAD.

She was convicted in June of first-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery by administering a dangerous substance, Knox County State’s Attorney Ashley Worby said in a statement.

According to reporting by KWQC, prosecutors said Oglesby used eye drops to poison Young’s food and drinks over the span of several months beginning in the summer of 2021.

The poisoning continued until Young died on Nov. 1, 2021, Worby said in the statement. Oglesby then hid his body in a storage unit located across the street from their shared home.

“Nearly a year passed before Young’s remains were discovered on October 7, 2022, in an advanced state of decomposition,” the statement reads.

Worby said Young was affectionately known in his community as “Rick the Cop,” and remembered him as a “devoted public servant.”

“Whether it was a neighbor in need, a family member, or a stray animal, Rick was always willing to lend a hand,” Worby said. “Known for his skill in repairing and building, he approached every task with precision and pride.”

Per reporting by WQAD, Oglesby maintained during her trial that she did not kill Young, with whom she claimed she was in a two-decade long relationship against her will.

“It gives us peace knowing that justice was served, and that even though Rick couldn’t be here himself, that we were able to be his voice, and his voice was heard,” Young’s friend, Natalie Mason, said in a victim impact statement, WQAD reported.

According to his obituary, Young was 71 when he died and is survived by three sons and five grandchildren.
