A woman was arrested in Quebec after the death of an abandoned newborn who was found in a bus shelter.

The baby was found on the morning of Monday, Oct. 28 in Longueuil, the city’s police service said in a Facebook post.

The infant died after being taken to the hospital, police said.

The discovery of the infant was reported to police at 6:30 a.m., and lifesaving measures were performed, according to police. Authorities said the baby was pronounced dead at 8:20 a.m.

Later Wednesday, Longueuil police said they had arrested a 33-year-old woman in connection with the newborn’s death. Police did not identify the woman by name.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that a police spokesperson said at a press conference that the woman could face a charge of infanticide.

Police did not confirm whether the woman was the baby’s mother, the CBC reported.

According to the region’s ambulance service, the baby was found naked and cold, with the placenta still attached, the CBC reported.

Police, per the CBC, said that authorities are currently evaluating physical and mental health of the woman in custody.
