A North Dakota woman has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after authorities allege she tried to kill him with a hatchet as he slept.
The alleged incident, which happened in Fargo, N.D., on Sept. 5, reportedly left her boyfriend with a large slice in his head and multiple fingers “hanging” off his hand, according to court documents cited by local news outlets InForum, Valley News Live, and KVLY.
The outlets reported that another man was at the house when the alleged incident occurred and was a witness to what happened. The man told police he saw Lena Deoliveira delivering a blow with a hatchet, adding that she seemed to be “out of it” during the alleged attack.
“He looked and saw Lena swing down with the hatchet; he couldn’t see the point of the strike due to obstructions but heard it sound like splitting wood, initially thinking she hit the headrest or headboard,” the witness told police, according to court documents cited by InForum.
The witness reportedly told police Deoliveira appeared to have come to after hearing a click from the footrest on a nearby recliner chair and seeing blood around her, leading her to quickly flee the scene. Authorities said she was arrested two days later in Moorhead, Minn., according to KVLY, which is only about a mile away.
Police responded to the scene after the victim called 911.
He was reportedly alone at the house when officers arrived and said that no one else was with him when Deoliveira attacked him, though police later learned of the witness who was present, according to Valley News Live.
Investigators found a blood trail coming from the garage of the house where the victim, suspect, and witness were all staying, according to KVLY.
The boyfriend was taken to a local hospital where he had surgery on his fingers, according to the outlet. Deoliveira declined to speak with police when she was arrested and has since been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.
Her next court appearance is set for Oct. 16.
