NEED TO KNOW

  • British resident Lisa Smith was shot and killed by her husband, Edward Smith, on Valentine’s Day
  • The court heard in an inquest on Sept. 17 that Lisa was planning to leave her marriage to Edward ahead of her death
  • After the shooting, the court also heard that Edward left a voice note for someone named “Nana” saying, “I’ve shot Lisa, she’s dead” before jumping off a bridge

A British woman was shot dead by her husband after trying to leave their marriage, an inquest was told on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

Lisa Smith, 43, was shot and killed by her husband Edward Smith on Valentine’s Day earlier this year in Kent, England, after telling her sister she was leaving her relationship, according to Sky News, the BBC and U.K. newspaper The Independent.

Edward then told someone he called “Nana,” via a voice note, “I’ve shot Lisa, she’s dead” before jumping from the Queen Elizabeth II bridge in Dartford.

PEOPLE previously reported that a woman identified as Lisa Smith had been fatally shot on Feb. 14 by a suspect believed to be known to her.

The woman had travelled from her and her husband’s home in Slough to stay with family in Kent before Edward tracked her down outside a pub and fired four shots at her with a handgun, per Sky News and The Independent.

Edward shot his wife twice in the neck and once in the chest at Three Horseshoes in Knockholt’s parking lot after blocking Lisa’s friend’s car with his, Kent and Medway Coroner’s Court heard, per Sky News and the BBC.

PEOPLE has contacted the Kent and Medway Coroner’s Court and the Kent Police for further comment.

The court was told that Lisa was picked up by her friends and sister from the train station before heading to the bar.

Her husband then arrived at the location just before 7 p.m. after he had called Lisa and her friends multiple times.

A police cordon outside the Three Horseshoes pub in Knockholt, Sevenoaks in Kent, after emergency services were called just after 7pm on Friday amid reports a woman had suffered serious injuries. A male suspect fled the scene and is yet to be found.

There was reportedly a “verbal altercation” between Edward and Lisa’s sister, Laura, per Sky News.

Lisa then left the pub and entered her friend’s car before Edward went into his vehicle and blocked the parking lot’s exit, the BBC reported.

After firing one shot from inside his car,  the coroner said, “He pulled forward in the car and fired a second shot, he was seen to exit the vehicle with arms outstretched holding a handgun and firing a shot through the driver’s side car window.”

The third shot was to Lisa’s neck, causing “fatal damage.” He then fired another shot as he walked closer to her passenger side.

“Four shots were fired, the first two from within his vehicle towards the seat. There were no injuries consistent with the trajectory of those first two bullets,” Coroner Katrina Hepburn said, per Sky News.

Lisa was pronounced dead at 7:42 p.m despite CPR from members of the public and emergency services.

In addition to Edward’s voice note to “Nana” saying, “I’ve shot Lisa, she’s dead,” the court also heard Edward say in another voice note, “Hopefully I’m going to get into heaven with my wife,” before jumping from the Queen Elizabeth II bridge in Dartford.

Coroner Hepburn told the court that there was “requisite intent from Edward Smith to kill her or cause her really serious harm.”

“I am satisfied on the balance of probabilities that a short form conclusion of unlawful killing would be safe and appropriate to set out in this manner,” she said.

She added, “There was intent to find Lisa Smith after she had left her home address and once she was found the car she was seated in was blocked, preventing any exit.”
