NEED TO KNOW

  • Netflix’s Unknown Number: The High School Catfish tells the story of Michigan teenagers Lauryn Licari and Owen McKenny, who were cyberstalked and bullied from 2020 to 2022
  • Owen’s friend, Khloe Wilson, was investigated by police of being the anonymous texter
  • FBI later uncovered that it was Lauryn’s mom, Kendra Licari, who was behind the crimes

Beal City, Mich., teenager Khloe Wilson found herself in the middle of a nightmare — being accused of a cyberbullying campaign.

Netflix’s new documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, which debuted on Aug. 29, revisits one of the most disturbing cyberbullying cases in recent years, when a mother was revealed as the person behind hundreds of anonymous messages that terrorized her daughter, Lauryn Licari, and her boyfriend, Owen McKenny.

In October 2020, Lauryn and Owen’s teenage romance began to crumble when they started receiving threatening texts from a series of unknown numbers. At first, suspicion fell on Khloe, a fellow student and Owen’s close friend, with whom Lauryn didn’t get along.

The harassment escalated quickly — sometimes 40 to 50 texts a day — targeting Lauryn with cruel threats. Eventually, Lauryn and Owen cut off contact with Khloe, convinced she was behind the texts, and even law enforcement initially considered her a suspect. The sender used an app to generate new phone numbers, making the texts nearly impossible to block or trace.

The FBI finally cracked the case in August 2022, discovering that the real culprit was Lauryn’s mother, Kendra Licari, who had been allegedly impersonating Khloe and other students to cover her tracks. Kendra was arrested in December of that year, per NBC News.

So, where is Khloe Wilson now? Here’s everything to know about the Michigan teen and where she is today years after being accused of cyberbullying.

Who is Khloe Wilson?

Khloe was raised in Beal City by her dad, police officer Craig Wilson, and her mom, Tami Wilson. She was considered a popular student at Beal City High School and a competitive athlete in basketball and volleyball.

However, Khloe wasn’t immune to teenage drama.

“Seventh through eighth grade, there were multiple allegations against Khloe where she was bullying or she wasn’t being nice to this person. The principal called Khloe in constantly, and she’s like, ‘I’m not doing anything,’ ” Tami shared in the Netflix doc.

Craig added, “She was a leader. At the time, she had a huge friend group. It spanned several other schools. I think to some people, I’m not going to say they were offended by that, but maybe they wanted that sort of thing for themselves.”

What was Khloe Wilson’s relationship to Lauryn Licari and Owen McKenny?

When she started high school, Khloe was friends with Owen. However, she didn’t get along with his girlfriend, Lauryn, which raised red flags with law enforcement and the parents who were trying to identify the anonymous texter.

“Khloe wasn’t the nicest person growing up. She wasn’t a bully, but she wasn’t a nice person by any means,” Owen said in the doc. “I think she said some things to Lauryn that just made Lauryn not like her.”

In the documentary, Lauryn claimed that “Khloe had a crush on Owen.”

“I think she would go and talk to him to make me jealous,” she continued. “I didn’t like Khloe because I feel like we just had two completely different vibes.”

How was Khloe Wilson involved in Lauryn Licari and Owen McKenny’s cyberbullying scandal?

Khloe’s name became entangled in the cyberbullying campaign involving Lauryn and Owen when the anonymous texter began sending messages related to Lauryn’s basketball team.

“I got one text where the sender talked about how many points they scored in the game the night before,” Lauryn shared in Unknown Number. “My mom was the volunteer scorekeeper at most games, so we thought that we could look at the score chart. When we looked, only one person had that many points — Khloe Wilson.”

Kendra and Owen’s mom, Jill McKenny, brought this to the attention of the high school principal and law enforcement, who ultimately interviewed Khloe. She denied having any involvement.

When Khloe and her family took a trip to Florida for spring break, Lauryn and Owen began receiving messages from Florida area codes, which only deepened suspicions against her. In an effort to clear her name, Khloe’s father encouraged her to turn her phone into law enforcement for a full forensic review. Investigators found no evidence tying her to the harassment.

As the messages went on, the anonymous sender began sharing photos of Khloe and Owen together. Police started to suspect that Khloe wasn’t the bully at all, but rather someone who was being deliberately framed.

Ultimately, the FBI uncovered the shocking truth in August 2022: Lauryn’s own mother, Kendra, was responsible for the messages, even impersonating Khloe to shift suspicion.

“I do feel guilty about Khloe — placing blame on her or her family,” Jill said in the documentary. “We just, at that point, were going off of any information that we had.”

But Khloe’s parents aren’t happy with the ordeal. “Khloe missed a whole godd— year of what should have been some of the best memories of her life,” Craig said in the documentary. “[It was] a whole year of people pointing the finger at her [and] being grilled by her parents.”

Khloe attended Kendra’s sentencing in April 2023, where she was sentenced to 19 months to five years in prison, per UpNorthLive. Kendra served 19 months in prison before being released on parole on Aug. 8, 2024, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections.

“It was very shocking to see her after everything had happened,” Khloe said in the documentary.

Khloe graduated from Beal City High School in May 2025.

She had previously committed to play volleyball at Montcalm Community College in November 2024, according to a Facebook announcement, but her name does not appear on the program’s 2025–26 roster.

Khloe has since told her side of the story in a September 2025 TikTok, addressing accusations that she had purposefully left Lauryn out of a middle school Halloween party. In the video, she told viewers that she did not purposefully exclude Lauryn and learned of the cyberbullying months after it had started.
