NEED TO KNOW

  • Allan Gore and Betty Gore were married for nearly a decade before he began engaging in an affair with their neighbor, Candy Montgomery
  • Allan and Candy ended their relationship in 1979
  • In June 1980, Candy killed Betty with an ax after allegedly getting into a heated confrontation about her and Allan’s affair

Allan Gore was having an affair with Candy Montgomery before she killed his wife, Betty Gore.

In June 1980, Candy went over to Betty and Allan’s home in Wylie, Texas, while he was out of town. Candy proceeded to kill Betty by striking her with an ax 41 times, but she claimed that she acted in self-defense after Betty got angry at her for having an affair with her husband.

The Montgomerys and the Gores were friends who met through church, but their lives turned upside down when Candy and Allan began engaging in an affair. Allan and Candy were secretly involved for months until he called it off shortly after Betty welcomed their second child in July 1979.

The following year, Betty was found brutally murdered in their home. Candy later confessed to attacking Betty in self-defense and she was acquitted of her murder in October 1980.

Betty’s death and the affair have been the subject of several movies, television shows and documentaries over the years — including the drama series Love & Death, in which Elizabeth Olsen portrayed Candy and Jesse Plemons was Allan. The series came to Netflix on Dec. 1.

While his story has been portrayed several times, Allan has retreated from the spotlight after testifying in Candy’s trial. Here’s everything to know about where Allan Gore is now.

He was married to Betty for 10 years, and they welcomed two children

Allan and Betty began dating after he was her math teacher at a college in Texas, according to Texas Monthly. The couple tied the knot in January 1970 and eventually moved to the small town of Wylie, where she was a teacher, and he worked at an electronics company.

They welcomed two daughters together, Alisa, who was 5 years old at the time of Betty’s death and Bethany, who was almost a year old, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Allan had an affair with Candy Montgomery

In the midst of Allan’s marriage to Betty and Candy’s marriage to her husband, Pat, Candy and Allan engaged in an extramarital affair. The two Texan families met through church in 1978, and Candy quickly developed an attraction to Allan, per Texas Monthly.

They developed a close bond as active members of their church, and their relationship turned physical on Dec. 12, 1978, per the outlet. Candy and Allan went on to meet up every other week for several months from 1978 into 1979.

By February, Candy reportedly started developing feelings for Allan, but Allan was unsure where he stood.

By June of 1979, Allan told Candy that they needed to take a break from their physical affair, since his wife was about to give birth to their second child. However, when they reconnected the following month, Allan allegedly started to feel guilty about hurting his wife and daughters, so he ended their relationship.

Candy killed Allan’s wife, Betty, with an ax while he was out of town

Nearly a year after Candy and Allan’s affair ended, Allan was out of town while Betty was home with their youngest daughter in June 1980. At the time, Candy was watching the Gores’ older daughter.

On June 13, Allan hadn’t heard from Betty, so he asked Candy if she had seen her, and Candy assured him that she was fine. He also called another neighbor and asked them to use a house key to go check on Betty in their home.

The neighbor found Bethany in her crib and a gruesome crime scene close by. They reportedly saw an “ocean” of blood near the utility room and told Allan that Betty had been shot, since they had not found her body, per Texas Monthly.

Police began investigating the crime scene and discovered that Betty had been stabbed 41 times with an ax. Although Candy initially claimed that she had an alibi during the killings, she became the primary suspect when authorities learned that she and Allan had had a months-long affair.

Candy was arrested for Betty’s murder on June 26, 1980, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. She stood trial for Betty’s murder later that year and pleaded not guilty. She further alleged that she killed Betty out of self-defense after Betty confronted her about the affair.

Allan testified about his relationship with Candy during her 1980 trial

During Candy’s October 1980 trial, Allan took the stand to speak about their affair.

Allan testified that she initiated the affair by allegedly telling him, “I was attractive to her,” United Press International reported at the time. He continued sharing his side of the story and included details about their meetups in motels.

Allan claimed that by October 1979, he had cut off his relationship with Candy because he “could not share myself” with her. However, he also claimed that their breakup was amicable and that they still occasionally ran into each other at church prior to Betty’s death.

After finding out about his wife’s death, Allan said that he called Candy right away to tell her the news, and she expressed “surprise and shock.” He also said he saw her the day after Betty’s body was found.

Candy was eventually acquitted of Betty’s death after claiming that she was only defending herself from Betty during a heated confrontation over the affair. She alleged that Betty was the one who grabbed the ax, and she took it from her and slashed her in a blind rage.

Allan remarried and moved away, while his kids were raised by Betty’s parents

In the 45 years since his wife’s trial, Allan has stayed out of the spotlight. He remarried a few months after the October 1980 trial, which caused significant tension between his and Betty’s families, per People Magazine Investigates: Candy and Betty.

Betty’s parents, Bob and Bertha Pomeroy, received custody of Alisa and Bethany and raised them in Norwich, Kan., until their deaths. Bob died in 2003, while Bertha died in 2010, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Betty’s brother, Ron Pomeroy, told People Magazine Investigates: Candy and Betty in 2022 that Alisa and Bethany are grown adults with their own successful careers and children of their own.

Meanwhile, Allan divorced his second wife, The Dallas Morning News reported in 2010. He has since moved to Sarasota, Fla., where, as of 2022, he was in a domestic partnership, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
