John Wayne Gacy’s murder spree led to the deaths of at least 33 teenagers and young men, but for years, he lived a double life.

The infamous criminal, nicknamed the “Killer Clown,” was a prominent member of his community. He owned a successful business, participated in local events and even volunteered as a clown at children’s hospitals and charity events. He was married twice and had two children.

But behind closed doors, Gacy had a dark side, luring innocent young men into his house, then sexually assaulting and torturing them. He took their lives, often strangling them, and buried their bodies in the crawl space underneath his family’s suburban home. Throughout his reign of terror, mainly in the 1970s, he was known to have had at least 33 victims.

While Gacy’s children weren’t subjected to horrible acts, their lives were still forever changed by his actions. Gacy and his first wife, Marlynn Myers, welcomed son Michael and daughter Christine years before his murder spree began. But by the time Gacy was caught, Myers had already cut him out of their lives.

Since Gacy’s imprisonment and eventual death, both Michael and Christine have lived their lives entirely out of the spotlight, seemingly choosing never to acknowledge their father or his crimes.

Who was John Wayne Gacy?

Gacy, the second of three children, was born and raised in Illinois by his parents, John Stanley Gacy and Marion Elaine Robison.

While he never finished high school, he worked a variety of jobs before enrolling at Northwestern Business College, according to The New York Times. He later began working at a shoe company and lived a seemingly ordinary life, but hid a secret from everyone around him.

Behind closed doors, Gacy was engaging in intimate relations with other men, a sexual preference that would later turn deadly. By 1967, he was coercing teenage boys into sex, and the following year, two boys told authorities what Gacy had done to them, per the outlet.

Gacy was arrested on multiple charges related to his assaults. While he denied the claims, he was indicted for sodomy. Gacy was later charged with one count of sodomy and sentenced to 10 years in prison in December 1968.

That same day, Gacy was sentenced in the sodomy case, his first wife, Myers, filed for divorce, according to The New York Times. They met while working at the Nunn-Bush Shoe Company, and after a nine-month courtship, the couple wed.

In 1966, they welcomed their first child, a son named Michael. The following year, their daughter Christine was born. Gacy later recalled this as one of the happiest periods of his life.

“I just had such a nice warm feeling, and I was so happy with her and the two kids, Michael and Christine. It was like being in church all the time,” Gacy said in recordings shared in Conversations With A Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes.

Still, their relationship was filled with difficulty. By the time it was uncovered that Gacy had assaulted teenage boys, Myers was ready for a divorce. Although Gacy disagreed initially, Myers’ petition for a divorce was granted, and she was given full custody of their kids, per Killer Clown: The John Wayne Gacy Murders.

He saw his ex-wife and their children for the last time in 1969. At the time, Michael and Christine were still young.

Where are Christine and Michael Gacy now?

While Gacy tried to maintain a relationship with his children during his first stint in prison, Myers did not permit them to have contact.

As per Killer Clown: The John Wayne Gacy Murder, Gacy attempted to arrange visits with Michael and Christine, and Michael wrote them letters from prison. He even sent money to buy them Christmas presents — but all of his correspondence went unanswered.

After Gacy’s release, he went on to cause more harm, murdering at least 33 people. When the case went to trial, he was charged with 12 murders and sentenced to death on March 13, 1980. He was executed by lethal injection on May 10, 1994.

Since then, Christine and Michael have remained out of the public eye. They have never spoken publicly about their father and have appeared to cut contact with the Gacy family. According to Gacy’s sister, Karen, she has attempted to get in touch but has never heard back.

“I tried sending gifts to the children. Everything was returned,” she said during an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2010. “I often wonder about them, but if [Marlynn] wants a private life. I think she’s owed that. I think the children are owed that.”
