NEED TO KNOW
- Jason Corbett was killed in August 2015 by his wife, Molly Martens, and her father, Tom Martens, who claimed it was self defense
- At the time, Jason’s children, Jack and Sarah, were 10 and 8, and had already experienced the death of their mother years prior
- Now, Jack and Sarah are sharing their side of the story in Netflix’s A Deadly American Marriage
Jack and Sarah Corbett Lynch faced unthinkable tragedy — twice — during their childhoods.
By the time the siblings were 10 and 8 years old, respectively, they had experienced the devastating losses of both of their parents. Their mother, Margaret Fitzpatrick, died unexpectedly in 2006 from a reported asthma attack, when Jack was only 2 years old and Sarah was a newborn. Then, in 2015, tragedy struck the Corbett children again when their father, Jason Corbett, was bludgeoned to death in his bedroom, while Jack and Sarah slept just steps away.
Adding to the shock and heartbreak of Jason’s murder was the fact that Jason’s second wife — and the children’s stepmother — Molly Martens Corbett was behind the attack against the Irishman, along with her father, retired FBI agent Tom Martens. The pair alleged they had acted in self-defense and accused Jason of being abusive, but Jason’s family, along with his two surviving children, claimed that Molly intentionally murdered her husband (with the help of her father), according to CBS’ 48 Hours.
Molly and Tom were charged with second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter in 2016, the Irish Independent reported. The two were originally found guilty of the first charge and sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison, but their convictions were overturned in 2020, allowing both Molly and Tom to take a plea deal in 2023. They were released from prison in June 2024, according to the Associated Press.
Now, a new Netflix documentary is taking a closer look at the tragic — and complex — story. A Deadly American Marriage, which started streaming on May 9, dives deeper into the events of the night of Aug. 1, 2015, and seeks to shine “a bright light on the many questions that have lingered since.” To do so, the true crime docuseries features exclusive interviews with Molly and Tom — as well as Jack and Sarah.
So, where are Jason Corbett’s children, Jack and Sarah Corbett Lynch, now?
Who are Sarah Corbett Lynch and Jack Corbett Lynch?
In the early 2000s, Jason Corbett was a young husband and father living in Limerick, Ireland. He married his wife, Margaret Fitzpatrick, in 2003, and the newlyweds welcomed two children soon after.
“They were just so happy and so excited with life and so enthusiastic about it as well,” Tracey Corbett Lynch, Jason’s sister, told 48 Hours. “I remember them saying that their family was complete. They had their little prince and princess.”
But life took a devastating turn for the family shortly after Sarah’s birth. In November 2006, Margaret — a lifelong asthmatic — died following a sudden and severe asthma attack. Two-year-old Jack and 12-week-old Sarah were left without a mother and Jason, who was just 30 at the time, was a single father and widower.
Realizing he needed help raising his children, Jason hired Tennessee-born Molly Martens as an au pair in 2008. According to the Irish Times, she was the fourth nanny Jason had hired since his wife’s death. At the time, Jack was 3 and Sarah was 17 months old, according to Sarah’s 2025 memoir, A Time for Truth: My Father Jason and My Search for Justice and Healing.
Within weeks of Molly’s arrival in Ireland, her relationship with Jason evolved from professional to romantic. She revealed in a 2021 interview with Elle that, after feeling lost and inadequate after dropping out of Clemson University, caring for Jason and his two young children had given her a newfound purpose.
In April 2011, after their Valentine’s Day engagement the year prior, Jason, Molly, Jack and Sarah moved to a suburb of Winston-Salem, N.C., per the Irish Times. Two months later, in June 2011, Jason and Molly were married in her hometown of Knoxville, Tenn., with Jack serving as a ring bearer and Sarah as a flower girl.
But, according to Sarah’s account in her memoir, her father was initially hesitant about the family’s move to the U.S.
“He … wanted his fiancée to be happy, especially as she was the woman who Jack and I considered our mother,” Sarah wrote. “He didn’t want to risk us losing another mother figure.”
What happened to Jack and Sarah’s father, Jason Corbett?

Aug. 1, 2015, appeared to be a typical Saturday for the Corbetts: Jason mowed his lawn with the help of a neighbor, according to Elle, and then the duo shared beers in the driveway while their children played and the wives socialized.
Around 8:30 p.m., Molly’s parents, Tom and Sharon Martens, arrived for an impromptu visit. The family had a late pizza dinner before heading to bed, with Molly’s parents going to sleep in the downstairs guest bedroom, ABC News reported. But during the night, that typical Saturday turned deadly when Jason was involved in a fatal altercation with his wife and his father-in-law.
At around 3 a.m. on Aug. 2, Tom — a former FBI agent — called 911 to report that a fight had occurred between Molly and Jason, and he had intervened. According to a recording of the phone call, Tom told dispatchers that Jason was “in bad shape” and that he thought he “may have killed him,” the Winston-Salem Journal reported. When police arrived, they found 39-year-old Jason bludgeoned to death on his bedroom floor.
Both Molly and Tom told authorities they had acted in self-defense. According to interviews given to police and media outlets, Molly alleged that Jason had been physically and emotionally abusive for years, and that night was no exception.
“The incidents occurred as they did on a somewhat regular basis,” Molly said in court about the alleged abuse, per ABC News. But during the early morning hours of Aug. 2, “the difference is that my father was there.”
Tom was reportedly woken up in the middle of the night by the sounds of an argument and went to investigate. Upon entering the primary bedroom, he allegedly discovered his son-in-law choking his daughter and threatening to kill her. Molly and Tom each claimed they feared for their lives and, as a result, struck Jason in the head with a baseball bat and paving stone.
“I used the force that was necessary to end the threat,” Tom said in a 2017 interview with 20/20. “That’s what I was trained to do for over 31 years, end the deadly threat.”

In 2007, after the death of his first wife, Jason named his sister Tracey and her husband, David Lynch, Jack and Sarah’s guardians. But, in the days immediately following his death, Molly filed for custody, according to the Irish Independent, launching a bitter custody battle over the children.
In the legal fight that ensued, it was revealed that Jason had allegedly resisted Molly’s attempts over the years to adopt Jack and Sarah, and was protective of their Irish citizenship. According to his brother John, Jason was specifically concerned that the children would not be returned to Ireland in the event that something happened to him, the Irish Independent reported.
After a three-week-long custody case, a judge ruled in favor of the Lynches, and Jack and Sarah (who were 10 and 8 at the time, respectively) were turned over to their aunt and uncle. They returned to Ireland, where they underwent “intensive therapy,” according to 48 Hours, and settled into life at home with their cousins.
Molly, meanwhile, was reportedly devastated by the court’s decision. She began posting Facebook messages to the children, often leaving a phone number and email address for them to contact her, according to The Irish Times.
“I will never stop loving you. I am sorry that we do not share our genetics,” she wrote in one post from Dec. 8, 2015. “We shared our lives and I was the person chosen to be your mom. I was the person you called mom for eight years. You will always be my children. You are my heart and soul.”
What role did Jason Corbett’s children play in his murder trial?

After a three-week trial in the summer of 2017, a jury found both Tom and Molly guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Jason. At their sentencing in August 2017, Jason’s son Jack, who was 13 at the time, wrote a victim impact statement that was read before the court.
“My dad was always there for me. I don’t have that anymore,” his statement read, according to the Irish Independent. “I will never be able to give him a hug or a card on Father’s Day. He won’t see me grow up.”
The powerful words from Jason’s older child reportedly left many in the courtroom in tears. Subsequently, the judge sentenced Tom and Molly to 20 to 25 years in prison.
But statements of a different kind from Jason’s children would become a factor in Tom and Molly’s appeal. Days after Jason’s death, both Jack and Sarah were interviewed by a social worker and claimed they had seen their father be physically abusive towards Molly, according to 48 Hours. Nine months later, the children recanted their statements and alleged that Molly had coached them on what to say.
The statements from the children were excluded as evidence in Molly and Tom’s 2017 trial, with a judge declaring them unreliable hearsay, according to The Assembly. But in 2020, North Carolina appellate courts ruled that the exclusion of those statements, as well as other evidentiary issues, were prejudicial and prevented Molly and Tom from receiving an effective defense. Their convictions were subsequently overturned, and a new trial was ordered.
The Martens’ second trial was scheduled to start in the fall of 2023; however, Molly and Tom both accepted plea deals, eliminating the need for another trial. Molly pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter, while her father pleaded guilty to the same charge, WXII 12 News reported. The more serious charges of second-degree murder were dropped.
At Tom and Molly’s re-sentencing in November 2023, both Jack and Sarah stood before the judge and the court to speak out against their former stepmother. Jack emphasized that he had never seen his father abuse Molly, and accused her of being a lying, manipulative “monster,” according to the Irish Independent.
“I have been made to relive it all,” Jack, who was 19 at the time, told the courtroom. “Hearing my words being used to try to mitigate the crime committed. My words were weaponised to help Molly and Tom Martens get away with killing my dad.”
Sarah had similarly scathing words for her former stepmother. “Molly and Tom Martens have used me — and words I was forced to say as an 8-year-old child — to escape the just consequences of beating my dad to death,” a 17-year-old Sarah stated.
She added, “I can stand here today and say I do not love Molly and she is not my mother.”
Where are Sarah Corbett Lynch and Jack Corbett Lynch now?

Sarah and Jack have been living in Limerick, Ireland with their aunt and uncle — Tracey and David Lynch — since their father Jason’s 2015 death. The brother and sister have spent the past decade healing from the trauma of losing both of their parents, as well as honoring their father’s memory and seeking justice for his murder. However, the duo differ in how they approach paying tribute to their late parents.
Sarah is the more outspoken of the siblings. She frequently posts on Instagram about both of her parents, honoring their birthdays, Mother’s and Father’s Day and the anniversaries of their deaths. Sarah, who is an avid diver, has also written two books about her experiences: Noodle Loses Dad, a 2020 children’s book about loss, grief and blended families, and her memoir, A Time for Truth: My Father Jason and My Search for Justice and Healing, released in February 2025.
“This is my story, and I want it to be my family’s story,” Sarah told Irish media site Evoke about her memoir. “I’ve written my truth now. I’ve listened to Molly my entire life… I don’t have to listen to her lies any more.”
Jack, however, is much more private than his younger sister. He is a singer-songwriter who is currently studying music in college, according to Sarah — and he prefers to not speak publicly about his parents’ deaths.
“Jack and I are very different,” Sarah told Evoke about her brother. “He wants the truth to be out there, but he just doesn’t want to do interviews.”
However, Jack made an exception when he agreed to participate in Netflix’s documentary, A Deadly American Marriage. He, along with his sister and other members of their family, were interviewed over the past four years for the true crime doc, which began streaming on May 9.
Jack and Sarah felt their participation “was important … because it highlights the profound impact of the absence of justice we faced in the judicial system,” they shared in a statement on their family’s Instagram account. They also wanted to be a voice for their late father.
“Though he may have been silenced, it is our responsibility to continue speaking on his behalf,” the siblings said.
