A 75-year-old veteran remains hospitalized in a coma after allegedly being punched by a DoorDash driver for telling him to slow down in his Michigan neighborhood.
Veteran Lloyd Poole’s daughter, Jen Shaw, alleged to local outlet WXYZ that the 75-year-old walked out of his driveway in Wixom on Sunday, Dec. 28, to tell the delivery driver — identified by Wixom Police as Ryan Turner, 40 — that he believed he was going too fast.
That’s when Turner physically assaulted Poole, Shaw alleged.
“Punched him right in the side of the head. My dad fell, never got up, never moved, and the DoorDash driver got back in his vehicle and drove away,” she told the outlet.
Following the alleged attack, Poole was hospitalized. According to Shaw, he sustained a black eye and underwent emergency brain surgery, during which doctors removed a portion of his skull.
Shaw told WXYZ that her father has not regained consciousness.
“He’s not responding. He can’t talk. He’s not awake,” she said. “We don’t know when he’s going to get out of this hospital bed. That may never happen.”

Wixom Police said they were called to the area of Barberry Circle and Windingway Drive in Wixom at around 5:21 p.m. local time on Dec. 28 for a report of a man lying unconscious in the roadway, per CBS News. An initial investigation revealed that Poole was possibly involved in “a road rage incident.”
According to Wixom Police, Turner went to the police station and admitted to being confronted by Poole for speeding through his neighborhood, per CBS News. Turner allegedly told police that he felt threatened and punched Poole, causing the elderly man to fall and hit his head in the road.
Turner also allegedly admitted to driving away after the incident, according to police.
Turner was arrested and taken to the Oakland County Jail, per online records. He was charged with one count of aggravated assault and posted a $35,000 bond on Thursday, Jan. 1.
PEOPLE has reached out to the Wixom Police, as well as DoorDash, for comment.
In a statement to CBS News, a DoorDash spokesperson said: “What occurred was absolutely appalling and unacceptable. DoorDash has zero tolerance for violence, and we have permanently removed the individual’s access to the platform.”
“We are working with local law enforcement to support their investigation to ensure justice is served,” the spokesperson added.
Shaw told WXYZ that Poole’s family members have been taking shifts to be by his side in the hospital as he remains in a coma. They are hopeful he will regain consciousness soon.
“You just don’t know with the brain, so we’re very concerned. We’re really worried,” she said.
