NEED TO KNOW

  • Tyler Robinson made his second court appearance along with his new attorneys
  • Robinson, charged with the murder of Charlie Kirk, appeared virtually while his attorneys were in the courtroom
  • Robinson will appear in person on Oct. 30

Tyler Robinson, the man accused of killing Charlie Kirk, appeared virtually in court on Monday, with his three new attorneys present in the courtroom.

Robinson is charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, violent offense in the presence of a child and two counts each of obstruction of justice and witness tampering. He did not appear in person, was not shown on camera and did not speak during the hearing on Monday, Sept. 29.

Robinson’s lead counsel is Kathryn Nester, who spoke during the hearing and requested a preliminary hearing for her client once the defense has enough time to gauge how much discovery evidence it will need to process.

Also a part of Robinson’s legal team are Michael Burt and Richard Novak, both California attorneys granted a “pro hac vice” to participate in the Utah case.

Robinson’s next appearance was scheduled for Oct. 30, which he is expected to attend in person.

Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty against Robinson, who authorities allege fired a high-powered rifle and killed Kirk while the right-wing activist was speaking at a rally at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.

Monday’s appearance in court was the second for Robinson since his arrest. At his first, he appeared virtually wearing a suicide-prevention vest.

During the first hearing, Judge Tony Graf read aloud the charges against Robinson, which allege that the suspect “intentionally selected” Kirk due to his “belief or perception regarding Charlie Kirk’s political expression.”

Robinson was arrested after family members recognized surveillance images of the suspect released in the aftermath of the shooting and convinced him to turn himself in, according to Utah Gov. Spencer Cox.

A previously released charging document alleges that Robinson’s roommate and romantic partner — who authorities say is transitioning from male to female — received messages from Robinson related to details of the shooting.

Robinson allegedly said he had planned the shooting for “a bit over a week” and that he’d “had enough of his hatred.”
