NEED TO KNOW
- Los Angeles police confirmed that American Idol supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband, Thomas Deluca, were found dead with gunshot wounds inside their Encino home on July 14
- Raymond Boodarian, 22, was charged on July 17 in connection with the killings
- On July 10, police responded to two burglary calls at the couple’s home. Finding no signs of forced entry, they left. PEOPLE can exclusively confirm the second call reported an armed suspect. The couple was murdered that same day
On a sunbaked afternoon in the quiet hills of Encino, a nightmare unfolded behind the white stucco walls of a music-world power couple’s upscale home. On July 10, the Los Angeles Police Department received two separate 911 calls reporting a disturbance at the residence of American Idol music supervisor Robin Kaye and her musician husband, Thomas Deluca.
But what hadn’t been made public — until now — is the content of that second 911 call: a report of an intruder with a “firearm,” according to dispatch audio exclusively obtained by PEOPLE. Officers were dispatched. When they arrived, they walked the perimeter on foot, and a helicopter flew overhead at different times. And then — they left.
Despite the nature of the call, police didn’t make entry. They didn’t breach the door. They didn’t look inside. They didn’t know that the couple were already dead — or possibly dying. Their bodies weren’t discovered until four days later.
Now, investigators believe the couple were murdered on the same day officers stood outside the front of their home, mere feet from the scene of the crime. Could Kaye or Deluca have been saved if police had made entry? Could their final hours — or moments — have gone differently?
That decision by police may have been the difference between life and death. If they were still alive inside, they died waiting. If they were already gone, their bodies lay undiscovered for days, while sirens faded and the sun set over a house full of silence.
The day began like any other when the couple, both 70, entered their $4.5 million residence after grocery shopping — unaware that an intruder was already inside their home. Investigators believe the suspect had been inside for roughly 30 minutes before Kaye and Deluca arrived and then confronted him, according to police. Shortly after, the victims were dead — brutally shot execution-style, multiple times in the head. Their bodies wouldn’t be discovered until later by police on July 14.
Dispatch audio reveals that the second 911 call reported a suspect with a weapon — but police didn’t enter the home to confront the intruder that day.
Details of that second, more urgent call suggest officers may not have grasped the grave danger they were responding to. What happened in the roughly 40 minutes between those two dispatch audio recordings — and why the second warning didn’t result in the home being entered — is now under investigation by a multi-agency task force that includes Operations-Valley Bureau Homicide, the LAPD Gang and Narcotics Division, the FBI Fugitive Task Force, and West Valley Division officers.
‘I Don’t Have Any Evidence of Forced Break-In’
The first dispatcher audio came in around 4:12 p.m. on July 10, which was a routine burglary report. Dispatch audio recordings reveal there was a potential robbery as a neighbor reported “an unknown man with a tan complexion” had hopped over a fence at the couple’s home at White Oak Avenue in Los Angeles. Dispatchers believed the intruder might have been driving a black Kia at the time.
Moments later, a police airship known as Air 16 responded to the call and arrived at the scene, hovering over the property. At around 4:16 p.m., the flight officer radioed dispatch: “Can you call back PR [person reporting], see if they still have eyes on?” Two minutes later, at roughly 4:18 p.m., the officer followed up: “I don’t have any evidence of forced break-in. We’re clear.”
“Air 16 clear,” the dispatcher confirmed seconds later.

But a second call came into dispatch roughly 40 minutes later around 4:53 p.m. This time, it wasn’t just a burglary. This time, the suspect reportedly broke into an office at the same home address and was armed. All units arrived shortly before 5:00 p.m., according to dispatcher audio. It is unclear what time the police first arrived on the scene. The LAPD canvassed the property, but nothing looked amiss.

The suspect is believed to have entered the home, which is heavily secured, with an eight-foot barrier and security cameras, through an unlocked door, police said. “When the homeowners returned back to their residence, a violent struggle ensued between them and the suspect, who was already inside their home, which resulted in the victims tragically losing their lives,” said Lt. Guy Golan.
Officers on foot reported that the property was locked. The helicopter used to surveil the scene from above did not see anything suspicious, according to officers. LAPD officials said the front door of the home was not visible from the outside during the initial response.

In a chilling revelation, a former police officer, veteran and private security guard claimed to PEOPLE last week that Kaye had previously reached out seeking security after a spike in burglaries in the area, a threat she allegedly said had already hit her family. Kris Herzog, who owns The Bodyguard Group and operates with off-duty police in private defense, said he got the call earlier this year.
Herzog, who represents clients like Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift and Mark Zuckerberg, said during that call he warned Kaye that home cameras may not save her life. He claimed he advised her to purchase bear spray or a pepper ball gun and hide them throughout the house.
According to Herzog, the LAPD’s policy of not entering a property unless there’s overwhelming probable cause may have prevented officers from discovering the crime sooner.
“Hundreds of departments around the country have the opposite policy. You get a burglar-there-now call, you jump the wall, you make sure those residents are OK. You try to apprehend the burglar. LAPD does not have that policy. Unless they have a ridiculous amount of probable cause — bloody shoe print, O.J. Simpson heading into the house from the street — I mean a ridiculous amount,” he claimed, exhaling then alleging:
“Their policies are 99% geared towards cover your a– and 1% toward public safety. They’re worried about getting sued and bad publicity. They are critically, dangerously underfunded. They don’t have the manpower.”
PEOPLE has reached out to the LAPD for comment on Herzog’s claims and the dispatch recordings but they declined to comment citing the “ongoing investigation.”

“Officers did arrive at scene. They conducted an investigation. They were unable to make entry onto the property due to it being highly fortified. However, they did do a fly over with the airship, there were no signs of forced entry or trouble at that time,” said Lt. Golan on July 15. “They cleared from scene.” There was no mention of the aircraft flying over the property twice during that time.
Bodies Discovered 4 Days Later
It wasn’t until four days later that officers discovered the bodies of Kaye and Deluca, after police responded to a welfare check at the couple’s home at 2:30 p.m. The dispatcher audio recorded around 2:35 p.m. said “Welfare check… subject one female, 5’9, 70 years old. Brown hair, brown eyes. Number two, male, white, tall, gray hair, dark eyes. Spoke with subjects on Thursday.” A “code 2,” was issued indicating an urgent call, and authorities arrived at the scene.
Police were provided with a gate code to enter the property and spotted blood on the front porch. Officers smashed a sliding glass door in the back to gain entrance to the home and found the bodies inside, as the front door was locked, according to police sources. Investigators believe the intruder locked the door after the shooting. “[The police] were met by the person reporting — a friend of the victim. The person had not heard from the residents here for several days, she was worried,” said Lt. Golan.
“She happened to have a key code to the vehicle gate, so she gave officers access to the residence,” he continued. “When [the police] were in the yard of the residence, they observed some signs of trouble, they breached one of the glass windows, went inside the residence and found both of the victims deceased.”
Paramedics responded and declared the pair dead at the scene. The Los Angeles Medical Examiner told PEOPLE their time of death was recorded at 4:14 p.m. on July 14. The couple, whose bodies were found in separate rooms, according to sources, said Deluca was found in the bathroom, while Kaye was located in the pantry. Police said the suspect then fled on foot.
The following day, the LAPD and FBI task force officers arrested Raymond Boodarian, 22, who resided in Encino, in connection with the killings.

After the bodies were discovered, LAPD detectives retrieved security surveillance footage that they allege showed Boodarian entered the property 11 days ago. That video, along with forensic evidence, allowed them to identify Boodarian and ultimately link him to the murders, according to Lt. Golan. A handgun was found at the suspect’s home, according to homicide detectives. They believe it’s the murder weapon, but that’s pending further forensic analysis testing.
Investigators tell PEOPLE they are still working to determine whether the suspect had any prior connection to the couple or if he had been involved in previous calls for service at the residence. However, records show Boodarian lives roughly four miles away from the couple’s home. The case still remains an active investigation.

Boodarian was arrested on Tuesday, July 15, at 3:13 p.m. without incident. He was charged two days later on July 17, with two counts of murder, as well as one count of residential burglary. The murder charges include the special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder during the commission of a burglary, as well as firearm allegations. He was represented by the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office.
Boodarian is being held without possibility of bond, jail records showed after his arrest.
Referring to the attack as “tragic,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman told PEOPLE in a statement the news has shaken the Valley community. “In a matter of moments, this couple was senselessly killed in their own home as they returned from the grocery store,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends who are grieving this tremendous loss.”
Hochman’s office will decide later if Boodarian faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or death, especially given his documented criminal history. His charges include three instances of misdemeanors of battery, exhibiting a deadly weapon and threatening to commit a crime with the intent to terrorize. His previous arrest dates are listed as June 25, 2024, February 6, 2024 and October 22, 2023. Those charges were later dismissed following court hearings related to mental competency and conservatorship.

In a statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson for American Idol said the team was “devastated” by the news and called Kaye “a cornerstone of the ‘Idol’ family.”
The statement continued: “Robin was truly loved and respected by all who came in contact with her. Robin will remain in our hearts forever and we share our deepest sympathy with her family and friends during this difficult time.”
Boodarian remains in custody at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility on Bauchet Street in Los Angeles, with bail still denied as of July 21. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Hilary Williams of the Major Crimes Division. Boodarian is scheduled to be arraigned on August 20 at 8:30 a.m. at the Van Nuys Courthouse.
