Authorities in Texas are investigating the shooting of a teen who was in his backyard, burying his recently deceased guinea pig.
A little after 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, the 18-year-old was in the backyard of his Houston home when he was shot, police said, according to WFAA, Click 2 Houston and FOX 26 Houston.
Authorities allege the shooter is a neighbor of the victim, but the suspect has not been named, per WFAA.
The victim, who has not been publicly named by police, and his brother were in the middle of burying his guinea pig, the outlets reported.
The guinea pig, named “Cookie,” reportedly died Wednesday and the teenager did not have time to bury it right away, his mother Andrea told WFAA.
“He buried the guinea pig on my property, never stepped foot, never laid a hand on the resident’s property,” Andrea told the outlet, which did not publish her last name.
Her son stumbled into her room, bleeding, and made a heartbreaking statement: “Mom, I love you. Dad, I love you, I’m not going to make it,'” he reportedly told her.
