  • Ramsey was captured by authorities on Sept. 13, one day after the shooting

A Georgia man has been arrested and faces charges of aggravated assault with intent to murder for allegedly shooting a police officer.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, Timothy Craig Ramsey, 26, was “taken into custody by law enforcement officers” around 6 p.m. local time in connection to the shooting of McCaysville Police Captain Brantley Worley in McCaysville, according to a statement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

The shooting took place on Friday, Sept. 12, around 11:10 p.m.

McCaysville Police Chief Michael Earley said in a statement that Ramsey has been booked into the Fannin County Jail.

WISTV reported that Earley said law enforcement received a tip from a local resident who recognized the suspect on Sept. 13. The wanted man was then found by police in a wooded area near a church.

“We want to thank all of our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners who helped to make this arrest possible. Their unwavering support and collaboration have been vital in the investigation and keeping the public safe. We also want to thank the community for their cooperation and partnership,” the GBI said.

PEOPLE reached out to Earley and the McCaysville Police Department (MPD) for additional information on Sunday, Sept. 14, but did not immediately receive a response.

The GBI issued a blue alert to locate Ramsey prior to his arrest. The agency described him as a white male who is 5 feet and 11 inches tall and weighs 185 lbs. He was said to be wearing a green top and green bottoms.

The suspect had fled the scene in a “bright green chemical-resistant type suit,” the GBI stated. “Ramsey is considered armed and dangerous.”

According to Earley’s press conference statement, the shooting occurred when Worley was “responding to a call for service.”

WISTV stated that Worley was shot in the throat during the altercation. He was then transported by aircraft to a hospital in Chattanooga.

Earley said Worley “is stable” in a Sept. 13 health update.

“The brain bleed has not changed, and we are waiting on word regarding the results of his latest CT scan. Doctors are also considering surgery on his nose, as the break has made it difficult for him to breathe,” the police chief said.

“Please continue to keep Captain Worley and his family in your prayers during this difficult time. Your support means so much to all of us,” he added.
