  • Alan Prudhome, a paraplegic man in a wheelchair from Oklahoma City, says burglars broke into his home twice, stealing both of his wheelchairs and medical supplies
  • Members of the community stepped in to help Prudhome get a replacement wheelchair and supplies after hearing about the thefts
  • Johnny Johnson III was arrested on a burglary charge. It’s unclear if any other arrests have been made

When intruders broke into his home, a paraplegic man in a wheelchair says they didn’t just take valuables — they took his mobility, stealing both of his wheelchairs and essential medical supplies.

The two separate break-ins happened at Alan Prudhome’s Oklahoma City apartment on Sept. 15 and Sept. 23, according to an Oklahoma City Police Department incident report reviewed by PEOPLE.

The thefts resulted in an estimated $1,200 loss, per the report, which notes that the intruders stole both of Prudhome’s wheelchairs (manual and electric) along with about $500 in cash, three phones valued at $100 each and roughly $300 worth of food.

KFOR and News 9 reported that the thieves also took his hand controls he uses to drive and some medications.

According to the incident report, Prudhome said he was asleep when two intruders — a man and woman — entered his unlocked apartment on Sept. 15. He said he woke up to find two people inside, with one trying to remove a pouch he wears around his waist as the other came out of his closet carrying a box of belongings.

“I can’t do much for myself. I can’t defend myself. And there’s two people in the house that I didn’t know,” Prudhome told KFOR.

Police at the scene said Prudhome was “visibly upset” and “continually stated nobody would have ever done this when he was able-bodied,” per the incident report.

Eight days later on Sept. 23, Prudhome returned home to find his door pried open, he told News 9.

“I just don’t feel comfortable being home by myself,” he told the outlet. “I freak out like I’m having a panic attack when I’m there alone.”

He added that the burglaries have left him struggling to afford replacements.

“Being on disability, I scrape by every month, and so I’m struggling as it is,” he said. “And then they took what cash I had.”

Police said Johnny Johnson III, 45, was identified by Prudhome near the apartment and taken into custody without incident. It’s unclear if there have been any other arrests in the case.

KFOR later reported that community members stepped in to help, delivering a replacement wheelchair and medical supplies after hearing his story. On his GoFundMe initiative, Prudhome thanked donors and said the funds would help him replace stolen items and cover moving costs after he decided not to renew his lease because of the break-ins.

“It’s been one of the hardest times of my life,” he wrote. “Any support, big or small, will make a huge difference in helping me get back on my feet and regain some stability.”
