A 26-year-old man from North West England has been found guilty of murdering his wife while she pushed their baby in a stroller.
Habibur Rahman Masum was convicted of murder, assault, making threats to kill and stalking on Friday, June 27, in Bradford Crown Court, according to an announcement by the Crown Prosecution Service.
On April 6, Kulsuma Akter, 25, was out shopping in the city of Bradford when Masum confronted her on the street after tracking her location.
Atker had been living in a safe house at the time because Masum had sent her messages saying he was going to kill her, authorities said.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service, Masum also sent her photos and videos saying he knew where she was living.
On the day of the attack, Atker said she didn’t want to continue being married to Masum as she pushed their seven-month-old son in a stroller. Masum then stabbed her more than 25 times with a kitchen knife, the BBC reported.
Stephen Wood KC, a prosecutor, told the Bradford Crown Court during trial that after fleeing the scene, Masum smiled while boarding a bus, per the outlet.
“There were no tears, there was no distress. Perhaps, members of the jury, the smile you can clearly see form as he gets on that bus is as a result of him thinking at that point he’s getting away. The smiling killer,” he said.
The West Yorkshire Police said in a statement that Masum fled the scene and was found three days later, 175 miles south of where he stabbed his wife.
“Masum carried out the murder then calmly walked away as if nothing had happened,” Stacey Atkinson, a senior investigative officer and detective from West Yorkshire Police said. “He left the scene and made his way out of the city to try and escape justice.”
Police confirmed Atker died from the stab wounds to her neck at a local hospital.
