A Colorado ski instructor is facing criminal charges after being accused of sexually assaulting a boy in his care during a training trip to New Mexico for ski students, according to authorities.
Jared Hedges, 48, of Frisco, Colo., was arrested in Taos, N.M., on March 22 and charged with criminal sexual penetration of a minor and criminal sexual contact, both felonies, the Taos County Sheriff’s Office alleges in a statement.
On March 22, deputies responded to a report of an alleged assault at the Taos Ski Valley where they learned that a “minor child” had been sexually assaulted, the sheriff’s office says in the statement.
The suspect, Hedges, was on a training trip with a group of ski students from Colorado. Hedges has been a coach for Team Summit Colorado for about two decades, 9News reports.
“He was in charge of travel arrangements, scheduling when they would travel, as well as sleeping arrangements,” Jason Jordan, an attorney for the victim and his family said, 9 News reports.
Authorities say a man called 911 at about 11:30 p.m. on March 21 to report that his stepson had allegedly been “molested” by a ski team instructor on an overnight trip, Jordan alleges, 9 News reports.
The victim’s mother and stepfather were staying at a nearby Airbnb and said the boy ran outside to meet them when they arrived at the cabin where the group was staying, according to the attorney.
Hedges allegedly began packing his bags when he learned the boy had contacted his parents, according to court documents obtained by 11 News.

The victim and two other students were sleeping in the living room section of a cabin when Hedges allegedly lay down on the floor next to the victim and touched him inappropriately, court records allege, 9News reports.
Hedges was arrested and then released from custody on a $10,000 bond, according to online court records. His next court date is scheduled for April 24.
Jordan said he is “deeply concerned” that Hedges may have allegedly assaulted other children.
“We’re deeply concerned there may be additional victims,” Jordan said in a statement obtained by CBS News. “These kinds of crimes are often committed by repeat offenders, and for years, Jared Hedges was responsible for travel logistics and controlling sleeping arrangements for young children.”
Hedges was temporarily suspended from coaching by U.S. SafeSport for “allegations of misconduct” and is no longer employed by Team Summit Colorado, 11 News reports.
It is unclear whether Hedges has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf.
