NEED TO KNOW
- A woman was fatally stabbed Sunday on Ketron Island, a far-flung area off Washington State, authorities say
- Police believe her boyfriend attacked her, then drove a vehicle off the ferry dock into Puget Sound hours later
- The suspect’s body was later recovered from the submerged car by search and rescue divers
On a tiny island off Washington State, a man allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death — then drove off a ferry dock into Puget Sound, authorities said.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said that the 26-year-old victim’s neighbors called police after they found the woman with multiple stab wounds on a front lawn just after 9 p.m. on Sunday.
Neighbors saw the victim’s boyfriend speeding off erratically toward the island’s ferry terminal. A short time later, a loud crash was heard at the ferry dock, and a vehicle was spotted floating in the water.
Residents of Ketron Island, home to between 10 and 15 permanent residents, gave the woman medical aid. But by the time PCSO deputies arrived after taking the Steilacoom ferry to the island, she had died.

Pierce County Dive and Marine Services Unit used a Remote Operated Vessel to find the man’s car, which they said had submerged 30 feet.
Inside, they found the victim’s drowned 30-year-old boyfriend, PCSO spokesperson Carly Cappetto told The News Tribune.
Capetto told KOMO News that the victim and suspect’s 1-year-old child was found at a neighbor’s house when deputies arrived. In their social media post, the department said the child was in Child Protective Services after the incident.
