You need to get to know holsters. It takes time to get a feel for the fit and see if it works with your style.
Some I keep, and others I break up with. It’s not you, it’s me. The Safariland Gravity holster is relatively new and, from the outset, offers ease of use and comfort. I wanted more than a one-night stand with the Gravity holster, so I have been wearing the paddle version for the past three months.
The Gravity is also available with a belt loop and other attachments, depending on your end use.
Injected-Molded Polymer vs Kydex Holster
The Safariland Gravity is made with injected polymer, which means it has a bit of flex to it, unlike Kydex, which is rigid and doesn’t flex. Both materials are slick, so there is no drag on the pistol when drawing it out of the holster. As long as retention is adjustable, one material is not better than the other.
I’ve used both types of materials and like them equally. Both are strong and durable. With injection-molded holsters, the tolerances can be held tighter to the pistol compared to Kydex. I look for how the holster feels. Is it secure? Is it consistent every time I wear and draw from it?
I’m not jumping out of helicopters or kicking in doors. I conceal carry or use it in competition.
Safariland Gravity Holster Specs
The Gravity is OWB style holster with an open top design. The low-cut sides are designed for an easy draw. The size of the holster is also compact, with no extra material to jab you when you move a certain way, and no extra bulk. It features a passive trigger guard detent with adjustable tension, ensuring the gun stays securely in the holster.
One test is to insert an unloaded gun into the holster, turn it upside down, and shake it. The gun should stay in place and not free-fall. One screw adjusts retention. You should also be able to go about your normal routine while wearing the holster, regardless of the activity, and the gun should remain in place.
The paddle is a wide and smooth polymer that conforms to your body, pulling the pistols close to your body. It flares at the top to contour around your hip. A hook bolted to the back of the holster clips under your belt and locks it in place during a draw. It comes preinstalled for the strong side hip. The paddle can be adjusted to tilt the grip forward or backward via two screws located at the back of the holster.
The outside of the holster is laminated with Condura in six different color choices from gray and black to different camos like tiger stripe and multi cam. My is in green camo.
EDC Belt Co., Foundation Belt
I used the Foundation Belt from EDC Belt Co., which is 1.5 inches wide and is made from Condura and reinforced nylon webbing, like scuba webbing. The buckle is low-profile and features a hook-and-loop closure. The lawyers wouldn’t let us say Velcro.
This is one of the most simplistic and comfortable concealed carry belts I’ve used and has been my go-to for years. It paired well with the Gravity.
Handguns Compatible With the Safariland Gravity Holster
There are not a ton of handguns compatible with the Gravity, but the pistols it does fit are popular. I carried my Glock G19 Gen3 in the Gravity. Although the Gen3 does not have an optic cut, the holster is designed to accommodate a handgun with an optic.
The low cut also means you clear the holster faster during a draw. I found the holster was slick to draw from and easily let go of the Glock when I needed it. Re-holstering was just a smooth and easy. The trigger area is completely covered, so there is little chance of an accidental discharge.
I also had a CZ P-10 C Ported in the shop, which has a similar footprint as the G19. The CZ fit in the Gravit,y but I needed to adjust the retention because it didn’t pass the shake test. Best not to use the CZ in the Gravity since it isn’t specifically made for that gun. The lawyers made us say that, too.
The past three months have been scorchers, and with paddle holsters, the extra material can cause you to sweat more. It’s just the nature of the holster.
I found even in the heat, the Gravity was comfortable to wear whether sitting at my desk or doing my daily chores. I like that the holster is easy to put on and off, yet is still secure.
Concealed Carry, Competition or Both?
The Gravity is approved for use in both IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) and USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association).
I plan on using the Gravity for my next GSSF match. In the meantime, I’m going to keep the Gravity in my concealed carry rotation with the Glock G19. With an MSRP of $65, that’s not bad for a holster that provides peace of mind.
