A South Carolina man was killed after entering a house authorities say was “booby trapped” with a shotgun.

Jordan Dove, 34, was found with an apparent gunshot wound when deputies responded to a report of a shooting at the home in St. Matthews, S.C., on Monday, March 3, according to a press release from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The sheriff’s office said Dove went to the home to check on a family member, but nobody else was inside at the time of the shooting. While searching the property, deputies found that the front door was barricaded shut and the back door was rigged with a shotgun.

Authorities described the home as “booby trapped,” claiming that the shotgun had been set so that it would fire if someone opened the back door, per the release. They added that the shotgun was “made safe” after being removed from the trap by investigators.

“This is an isolated incident and there is currently no threat to the public,” the sheriff’s office said.

A man identified by the sheriff’s office as Alfonzo Brown is expected to face charges in connection with the fatal shooting, per the release. Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers told local news stations WIS and WBTV that the house belonged to Brown, who is also Dove’s uncle.

The sheriff’s office said Brown is currently in jail out-of-state, per the release. The circumstances surrounding his incarceration were not immediately clear.

According to WIS, Summers believes Brown set the trap with the intention of harming authorities.

“This is my opinion…he knew the crime he was going to commit when he left here and went to Maryland,” the sheriff told the outlet. “He knew he would be on the run. He knew that he would be tracked back to Calhoun County. He knew that we would be coming out to get him, and I think he set it up for us.”

Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and ask anyone with information to contact the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office at (803)-874-2741.
