NEED TO KNOW

  • Nick Reiner, the suspect in the killings of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, was not at the home of his late parents when their bodies were discovered, according to ABC News
  • Nick was reportedly located “quickly” near the University of Southern California campus, a short distance away from the family’s Brentwood home
  • Nick has been arrested and is being held without bail on murder charges

Nick Reiner was reportedly not at the home of his late parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, when their bodies were discovered inside.

Nick, 32, allegedly left his parents’ home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles and traveled a short distance away, where he was ultimately located by police near the campus of the University of Southern California, ABC News reported.

Authorities were able to “quickly” locate Nick near the campus, the outlet reported, where he was arrested on suspicion of murder at around 9:15 p.m. on Sunday.

When reached for comment by PEOPLE, the Los Angeles Police Department’s public information officer confirmed that “the location of the suspect’s arrest was in the Exposition Park area near USC.”

PEOPLE has reached out to the University of Southern California for comment.

PEOPLE previously reported that Nick was taken into police custody on Dec. 14, hours after Rob and Michele were found dead in the home on Sunday afternoon. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, their bodies were discovered at about 3:40 p.m. Sunday. Police have subsequently said that Nick was then identified as the suspect.

On Sunday, Nick was arrested on murder charges in connection with his parents’ deaths. He is currently being held without bond in Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Jail.

Nick is set to appear in court on Tuesday, Dec. 16, a source tells PEOPLE.

The night before the killings, Nick, Michelle, and Rob all attended a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien, where Nick and Rob got into a “big fight,” two sources who were at the party told PEOPLE.

“Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous,” one of the sources shared.

Rob and Michele married in 1989, and had three children together: Jake, Nick, and Romy. Prior to marrying Michele, Rob was married to Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981. During their marriage, Rob adopted her daughter, Tracy.

Nick has previously spoken out about his struggles with addiction and homelessness, starting in his teens. Rob and Michele’s middle child told PEOPLE in 2016 that he cycled in and out of rehab beginning around age 15. As his addiction escalated, Nick said he drifted farther from home and spent significant stretches of time living unhoused in multiple states.
