Retired Nurse, 59, Dies After Being Trampled by Cows While Walking Her Dog By Bailey Richards

A woman died after she was trampled by cows while walking her dog.

Rebecca Jane Hitchings was in Exmoor in southwest England earlier this month when a herd of cows trampled her, an inquest was told, according to the BBC.

She suffered severe injuries and was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in the nearby city of Plymouth, the outlet reported.

Hitchings, 59, died at Derriford Hospital of her injuries on Thursday, Oct. 16, according to the BBC. She suffered blunt trauma, which led to hemorrhagic shock, the outlet reported, citing coroner Philip Spinney.

When hypovolemic shock is caused by blood loss, it is referred to as hemorrhagic shock, according to Healthline. Hypovolemic shock “occurs when the body begins to shut down due to the loss of large amounts of blood or fluid,” the outlet said.

Spinney did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, Oct. 26.

The inquest informed of Hitchings’ death took place in Devon. It has since been adjourned, per the BBC.

The outlet reported that it will later be transferred to a different coroner for a full hearing.

Hitchings was a retired nurse who was born in Exeter, according to the BBC. At the time of her death, she was living in the village of Woodcombe.

It is not currently clear what happened to Hitchings’ dog after the fatal incident.
