A Mississippi man has been charged in the killing of his pregnant ex-girlfriend after allegedly kidnapping her last month.
Joshua Demarshall Andrews allegedly abducted his ex-girlfriend Glynis Jackson from a Nissan plant in Canton, Miss. and then shot her on Monday, Jan. 27 before she tried to escape from the car and was struck by a passing vehicle, WTVA, WLBT and WSAZ reported.
Andrews has been charged with capital murder and possessing a firearm as a felon, Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker said on Jan. 28. He also faces a first-degree murder charge, according to local jail records; the Clarion Ledger reports this was related to Jackson’s unborn child.
Jackson was not named in the sheriff’s statement, but was identified as the victim by the outlets.
Police responded to the scene on a report of an abduction around 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 27, according to Madison County Sheriff’s spokesman Heath Hall, local magazine Madison County Journal reported. Authorities say Andrews allegedly forced Jackson, a mother of three, into a vehicle before taking off, WLBT reported.
The victim was shot multiple times, per Tucker’s statement. Holmes County Sheriff Willie March said she was killed when she tried to escape her alleged abductor and was hit by another vehicle, WTVA, WLBT and WSAZ reported.
“This is a heinous crime that shocks the conscience of society and Andrews will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” he said in his statement.

Andrews later turned himself in at the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, WTVA and WSAZ reported.
It wasn’t clear if the driver of the vehicle that allegedly hit Jackson is facing any charges. Neither Tucker nor March immediately responded to PEOPLE’s request for further information.
