NEED TO KNOW

  • A Missouri mother has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of her 16-year-old son
  • Police alleged Krista Roy, 47, shot and then stabbed her son Carter Bennett to death on Monday at her home in St. Charles County
  • Roy was also reportedly taken to a local hospital on Monday for allegedly attempting to commit suicide following the alleged incident

When Carter Bennett’s friends hadn’t heard from the 16-year-old Missouri teenager in days, they knew something “highly unusual” was up.

Bennett’s friends called local police and asked them to check on him. But the scene officers walked in on at the family’s home in St. Charles County, Mo., revealed what police claim was a mother’s gruesome and emotional murder, according to KSDK, which cited court documents filed this week surrounding the teenager’s death.

Bennett, 16, was found dead Monday after officers entered the family’s home and noticed a foul odor, according to KSDK, as well as reports by The Kansas City Star, KMOV and First Alert 4 news.

Two days after police discovered the teenage boy laying dead in his own bed, the Office of Prosecuting Attorney of St. Charles County announced his mother Krista Roy had been arrested and charged in connection with his death, and revealed the troubling details surrounding the alleged murder in court documents later obtained by KSDK.

Prosecuting Attorney Joseph G. McCulloch said in a statement this week that Roy, 47, “admitted” to shooting and killing her son, stabbing him after she shot him as he allegedly pleaded for her to stop and help him.

“Roy admitted to retrieving a firearm from her ex-husband’s house, with the intent to shoot the victim and herself,” McCulloch said.

According to court filings reviewed by KSDK, Roy told police she stabbed her son multiple times after first shooting him while he slept in order to put him “out of his pain.”

“She then laid down with him because he was still alive, was caressing him and he was calling out her name, calling ‘mommy, mommy,’“ McCulloch reportedly said in court filings this week, according to the outlet.

The Kansas City Star reported that investigators later found the alleged murder weapon at Roy’s ex-husband’s home. According to the newspaper, Roy had been taken to a local hospital earlier Monday after allegedly attempting to commit suicide.

The St. Charles Police Department said in a statement this week that Roy has since been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. She is currently being held in custody on a $1 million cash-only bond, police said.
