NEED TO KNOW

  • Police are looking for a man who stole another person’s dog on a New York City subway train on Sunday morning
  • Police say the 45-year-old victim fell asleep and woke up to find his American Bully missing
  • Security footage showed the alleged dognapper leaving a subway station with the dog wrapped up in his hoodie

A New York City man who fell asleep on the subway woke up missing his beloved dog — and now authorities are searching for a dognapper who made off with the pup hidden in his jacket.

A NYPD spokesperson said in a statement that the dognapping occurred on Sunday morning around 6 a.m. local time aboard a northbound D train near the Norwood-205th Street stop in the Bronx.

“An unidentified individual removed a 45-year-old male victim’s American Bully dog as he slept,” the spokesperson said, adding that the thief then “fled with the dog in an unknown direction.”

Security video from Aug. 10 showed the thief crossing through an exit turnstile with the dog wrapped up in his hoodie as he left the subway station.

The suspect is described as a man in his early 20s with a dark complexion, slender build, medium length black braids, brown eyes and a black goatee, police said in the statement. He was last seen wearing a black faded jacket, black T-shirt, black shorts, black shoes and a black baseball hat.

The suspect is still on the loose, and the dog’s status is unknown. The investigation remains ongoing.
