NEED TO KNOW

  • Akanksha Adivarekar was sentenced to a hospital on Thursday in connection with the death of her 4-year-old son this past June
  • Adivarekar was originally charged with murder but agreed to a plea of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility last week
  • Prosecutors said Adivarekar stabbed her son to death in his sleep and then drank bleach before taking herself to a nearby hospital while still wearing a blood soaked nightgown

Months after climbing into bed with her 4-year-old son and inexplicably stabbing him 11 times until he died, an English mother has been sentenced to a mental health hospital.

Akanksha Adivarekar was sentenced on Thursday for the June 10, 2025 killing of her 4-year-old son Agustya Hegishte, who was found stabbed to death inside the family’s home in Maidenhead, England, after his mother had killed him in his sleep, drank bleach in an apparent suicide attempt and then traveled to a local hospital where she received life-saving surgery.

Adivarekar, a 37-year-old former medical consultant who described herself online as a “penfluencer,” was ordered to remain in a hospital with restrictions under the country’s Mental Health Act, according to the BBC, Metro UK, and the Bucks Free Press.

The Thames Valley Police Department said in a news release Thursday that Adivarekar had first pleaded guilty to her role in her son’s death last Wednesday, Dec. 3 during a hearing at the Reading Crown Court. “Today’s sentencing brings a complex and challenging investigation to its conclusion,” Detective Inspector Rob Underhill said in a statement after Akanksha’s sentencing hearing.

During the hearing, both the judge and Adivarekar’s husband expressed hope that her mandatory hospitalization could help her. Adivarekar’s husband, who was not identified in court, according to Metro UK, gave an emotional testimony and said, “I have lost my son, who was everything to me and also my wife.”

“The pain of this loss is indescribable,” the husband reportedly said, adding, “All I can do is to forgive Adivarekar for what she has done. I hope she lives a good, respectable life after her treatment. That would be the real justice for me and my son.”

Metro UK reported that Judge Michael Grieve KC told Adivarekar: “You require treatment, not punishment.”

“Inherent in this tragic case is that you will suffer terrible pain from what you have done forever,” the judge said, noting that there were “no welfare concerns” about the couple’s child before his unexpected murder in June.

“There was no rational motive for the offence,” the judge said, according to Metro UK. “Until the manic episode, you had a normal, loving relationship with your son.”

According to prosecutors, Adivarekar had arrived at the local hospital the day of her son’s murder wearing a blood soaked nightgown, telling staff that she killed her son in order to “end his suffering.” Adivarekar, who hospital staff said was “zoned out” when she arrived at the emergency room, later blamed her husband for her son’s death and then once again drank bleach at the hospital after she had life-saving surgery, according to Metro UK.

Adivarekar was originally charged with murder, but later agreed to enter a plea of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility, according to the Thames Valley Police.

“First and foremost, our thoughts remain with Agustya’s family following what has been a truly devastating loss,” Detective Inspector Underhill said in his statement Thursday. “We hope this outcome provides the family with some sense of closure and the space and privacy they need to grieve.”
