Former NBA star Paul Pierce was arrested late Tuesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence in Los Angeles, PEOPLE can confirm.
Pierce, 47, was arrested on Tuesday, Oct. 7 after California Highway Patrol said its officers found the Hall of Famer asleep at the wheel along U.S. Highway 101.
“At about 10:38 p.m. on Oct. 7, CHP officers responded to a multi-vehicle crash on northbound US-101, south of Lankershim Boulevard,” a spokesperson with the CHP told PEOPLE in a statement. “Officers closed four of six lanes to investigate the crash and began reopening them around 11:35 p.m. As traffic lanes reopened, officers saw a Range Rover SUV stopped in traffic lanes south of the crash scene.”
The spokesperson said that “when officers approached, they found the driver, later identified as Paul Pierce, asleep at the wheel.”
“Officers noted signs of alcohol impairment and conducted a DUI investigation,” the CHP spokesperson added.
Pierce was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the CHP. He was booked at the Central Los Angeles Area office.
“The CHP will present the case to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office for review,” the CHP spokesperson added.
PEOPLE has reached out to a representative for Pierce on Thursday but did not immediately receive a response to a request for comment.
Pierce has not addressed his arrest publicly, but shared a video of himself playing basketball at a gym on his Instagram Stories on Thursday.
Pierce played 19 seasons in the NBA and was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021. A native of Oakland, Calif., Pierce was selected with the No. 10 overall pick by the Boston Celtics in the 2008 NBA Draft.
Pierce spent 15 seasons with the Celtics, winning the NBA championship with the team and being named the NBA Finals MVP in 2008. A 10-time NBA All-Star, Pierce later played for the Brooklyn Nets and the Washington Wizards before finishing his career with the Los Angeles Clippers.
