A man whose daughter died in the Parkland, Fla., shooting is speaking out following an active shooter incident at Florida State University’s Tallahassee campus.
On Thursday, April 17, just after 12 p.m., the university sent out an alert on social media about the shooting near the student union, asking everyone on campus to shelter in place.
Six people were injured in the gunfire, according to CNN. One was in critical condition and five were in serious condition.
Speaking in the aftermath of the shooting, Fred Guttenberg said in a post on X Thursday afternoon that his late daughter’s friends were at FSU when the attack occurred.
“America is broken,” he wrote. “My daughter Jaime was murdered in the Parkland school shooting. Many of her friends who were lucky enough to survive that shooting went on to attend FSU. Incredibly, some of them were just a part of their 2nd school shooting and some were in the student union today.”
Guttenberg added, “As a father, all I ever wanted after the Parkland shooting was to help our children be safe. Sadly, because of the many people who refuse to do the right things about reducing gun violence, I am not surprised by what happened today.”

Guttenberg’s daughter, 14-year-old Jaime Guttenberg, was one of 17 teenagers and adults who were killed in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., on Feb. 14, 2018. Jaime was remembered as a passionate dancer and dog lover who dreamed of working as an occupational therapist, PEOPLE previously reported.
A Tallahassee police spokesperson confirmed to PEOPLE that a suspect in the FSU shooting had been taken in custody. Further details are expected to be released at a press conference Thursday afternoon.
The Florida State University Police Department is in charge of the investigation, the Leon County Sheriff’s Department tells PEOPLE.
