The gunman who killed four people and left another critically injured in a Manhattan office tower Monday once worked surveillance at a Las Vegas casino, his employer confirms to PEOPLE.
Shane Devon Tamura, the 27-year-old shooter identified by the NYPD, held a Nevada state license to work in casino surveillance from 2019 through 2024, Caesars, his employer, confirms. Tamura worked at Horseshoe Las Vegas, formerly Bally’s.
In a video posted to YouTube, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tamura held an overnight security job at the Horseshoe and never showed up for his shift on Sunday.
His license, issued by the Nevada Private Investigators Licensing Board, did not authorize him to carry a firearm. However, several news outlets have obtained a photo showing his concealed firearms permit.
“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this tragic event,” Caesars said in a statement. “We are cooperating with law enforcement and will not be commenting further.”
Authorities say Tamura opened fire at 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise that houses Blackstone and the NFL, killing 36-year-old off-duty police officer Didarul Islam, who was working security in the building; 43-year-old Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner; 46-year-old security officer Aland Etienne; and 27-year-old Julia Hyman, who worked for Rudin Management.

After he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, authorities recovered a suicide note from Tamura’s body that mentioned chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma. PEOPLE previously reported. The 27-year-old had played football on at least two high school teams, and named the National Football League in the note.
“Study my brain, please,” he wrote. “I’m sorry.”

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a late night July 28 press conference that Tamura had a “documented mental health history.” His precise motive in the shooting is still unclear.
Tamura had two mandated mental health holds in Nevada in 2022 and 2024, according to ABC 7.
