NEED TO KNOW

  • Erin Patterson has been handed three life sentences for the murders of her former in-laws and another family member, according to reports
  • The 50-year-old Australian, who was found guilty of poisoning her relatives with death cap mushrooms during a lunch in July 2023, was convicted of the murders of her ex-husband Simon Patterson’s parents, Don and Gail, as well as Gail’s sister Heather, in July
  • Erin was also found guilty of attempting to murder Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, and will serve her life sentences concurrently with a 25-year sentence for that crime

The Australian woman who was found guilty of killing her former in-laws and another family member by poisoning them with death cap mushrooms has been handed three life sentences, according to reports.

On Monday, Sept. 8, Erin Patterson, 50, was sentenced to three life sentences with no parole for 33 years, per CNN, the BBC and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

PEOPLE previously reported in July that Erin had been convicted over the deaths of her estranged husband Simon Patterson’s parents, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, as well as Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, 66.

She was also found guilty of attempting to murder Heather’s husband, pastor Ian Wilkinson, 68, who remained hospitalized for weeks, 9 News reported at the time. The life sentences will be served concurrently with a 25-year sentence for the attempted murder of Wilkinson, CNN reported.

Don, Gail and Heather were taken to the hospital and died within days after consuming the Beef Wellington served by Erin, which had been laced with the deadly mushrooms at her Leongatha house in July 2023, PEOPLE previously reported.

PEOPLE has contacted the Supreme Court of Victoria for further comment.

In pre-trial evidence released last month, Erin’s ex-husband Simon also accused Erin of attempting to fatally poison him on multiple occasions, per the BBC.

Simon was invited to the fatal lunch in July 2023 but chose not to attend.

Prosecutors previously told the court that Erin lied to her guests that she had cancer, arguing that she used the cancer story to ensure her children would not be at the lunch, CNN previously reported. The defense did not dispute the cancer lie, according to the outlet.

“I am satisfied by July 16, 2023, when you unusually invited Simon, his parents, and aunt and uncle to a lunch without the children to discuss your non-existent medical issue, you did so with the intention of killing them all,” Justice Christopher Beale told Erin during the hearing on Monday, according to CNN.

Beale added that Erin had inflicted “untold suffering” on her own children, who lost their grandparents.

“The devastating impact of your crimes is not limited to your direct victims, your crimes have harmed a great many people,” Beale said, per the outlet.

“There is great anger at the callousness of your actions,” he added, the BBC reported.

“Your failure to exhibit any remorse poured salt in all the victims wounds,” Beale continued, adding that Patterson had “showed no pity for your victims.”

“Only you know why you committed [the murders]”, Beale said as he stated he would “not be speculating about that matter,” per the BBC.

Ian Wilkinson, the only guest to survive the toxic mushroom lunch with Australian murderer Erin Patterson, speaks to members of the media outside the Supreme Court of Victoria in Melbourne on September 8, 2025.

Survivor Ian Wilkinson, who has served as the longtime pastor of Korumburra Baptist Church, thanked authorities for their “professional, efficient and effective investigation,” according to CNN.

He called for “everybody to be kind to each other” and added that he is “no longer Erin Patterson’s victim, and she has become the victim of my kindness.”

Patterson can appeal her sentence or conviction until 12 a.m. on Oct. 6, according to the outlet.
