A grandfather has died after being shot in his home.
According to the BBC, 60-year-old Barry Dawson was killed when a gunshot was fired through the downstairs window of his home in County Durham, North East England, on Saturday, April 5.
In a press release on Wednesday, April 9, Durham Constabulary confirmed that a man had been charged with murder following Dawson’s death.
“Officers were called to an address in Elm Street, South Moor, at about 5.20pm on Saturday, April 5 following reports of a disturbance,” the release read. “Mr Dawson, 60, was found to have been shot and despite the best efforts of paramedics, he was sadly declared dead at the scene.”
Authorities said Dawson died of a single gunshot wound, which was confirmed by a postmortem examination.
“Kevin Dorward, 38, of Annfield Plain, has been charged with murder,” the release read. “Michaela Hetherington, 35, of Annfield Plain, has been charged with perverting the course of justice.”

Police said Dorward and Hetherington have been “remanded in custody” and will appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on the morning of April 10.
“Officers have today arrested a 21-year-old man on suspicion of murder,” the release added. “A 20-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman have also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.” All three remain in custody.

Dawson’s family described him as a “much-loved father, granddad and partner who will be greatly missed,” per the BBC.
“We are truly devastated, and his loss will leave an enormous gap in our lives,” they said.
Police said a “35-strong team of detectives from our major crime team continue to work around the clock, with support from armed response officers, specialist crime scene examiners, search teams, and neighborhood officers,” amid their investigation.
They added, “Several lines of enquiry are being pursued and the community will have noticed there has been significant police activity and they can expect this activity to continue for a significant period of time.”
